Description

Red Owl Analytics is a Baltimore-based startup developing a next-generation, big-data analytic platform. Our team blends cutting edge statistics, longitudinal social network analysis, text-taming frameworks, and NoSQL platforms to more intelligently analyze relational and document based datasets. We're assembling a team of world class statisticians, data scientists, and software engineers to impact the way corporations look at their data. We are solving really tough problems in uncharted territory—join us if you are up to the challenge!

We are looking for junior to mid-level candidates with extensive experience in building web applications with the Ruby on Rails stack (Rake, Rubygems, RSpec, Rack, etc.) and HTML/CSS/JS/jQuery. Experience with BDD frameworks (Cucumber), JS graphics libraries (D3, Rickshaw), production frameworks (Rubber), and authorization frameworks (CanCan) are all big pluses, but not necessary.

As one of a handful of engineers standing up this project, there is a tremendous opportunity to help guide the growth of the platform. You’ll have opportunities to help build a team of engineers around you and make important architectural decisions. In exchange, we guarantee that you will be challenged to learn, grow, and adapt every day.

Key differentiators (must haves):

  • Capable of domain modeling, assisting the core engineer team with designing a REST API
  • Comfortable implementing from a spec (given an API spec, generate a mock API and write a Rails app which can interface completely with it)
  • Capable of refactoring Rails app as/if/when dev specs change (in "get the product up and running mode" we are constantly faced with concurrent front/back end development: creating a mock API and developing against that, when we stand-up the final implementation, there are often changes/ refactors which have to take place when we wire the two together)
  • Given a graphically designed mock-up/ flat (PDF), implement/ build a rails application which looks identical to the flat with full functionality and implemented features
  • Extensive Java Script experience (at a minimum experience with SVG and D3 libraries)
  • Working knowledge/ experience with Coffee Script

We may be looking for you…

• If the first line of code you write when tackling a use case is describe
• If you think code really can have a smell
• If your code serves as its own documentation
• If you believe in leaving the campground cleaner than you found it
• If you have a CI server for your pet projects
• If you've ever plugged two keyboards and two mice into a computer during development
• If lots of "new" statements in constructors makes you twitch
• If you know all about advice, pointcuts, and weaving
• If the best part of your resume is hosted at github, sourceforge, codehaus, or codeplex
• If you get a rush out of pushing less lines of code than you pulled during a refactor
• If your bookshelf is overflowing with technology books
• If you can't wait for some free time to learn Scala, Clojure, Groovy, or Haskell
• If you have a blog
