Phonegap - From Front End to Back End

6:00 - Social time (meet some peeps)

6:10 - Lightning Talk - "CouchGaps" by Mike McKay

6:15 - Phonegap - The front end - Mike Wolf

A reviewing of Phonegap and what is possible. We will discuss some of the tools you can use to build out Phonegap apps (both JavaScript and HTML/CSS). Then well dive into a quick demo - "pretty vacant" which calls up to city data to show a random house and a google street view of it - show it in browser and then push it out to a couple devices. We will be adding in a couple Phonegap hooks, and discuss how we might adjust our code for tablet and phone.

6:45 - QA & Break

7:00 - Phonegap - Behind the scenes - Andy Trice We will build on top of the core JavaScript concepts and dive into native components. Learn at a high level how JavaScript and the Phonegap libs talk to each another. Well see how to interact with the underlying OS using plugins and how we can call JavaScript from the native code. Learning about plugin development in the native tools and the JavaScript interfaces to them. Some of the plugin examples will use audio and well see how the JavaScript ui interacts with the native plugins.

7:30 - QA

7:45 - Ping pong and beer sampling.

Food will be provided - exact type TBD. Some cold beverages as well.

Lightning Talks

Do you have something you'd like to share? A new library, a cool project, or just need a soapbox to rant from? We're making time for multiple 5-minute lightning talks at the beginning of every meetup. Email the organizers and we'll add you to the schedule.

We have a new venue! has offered their space to us for this meetup, it's located in Tide Point in the Ivory Building. Enter the building under the large sign that says "Ivory" and walk by the big blue crab then take an immediate left. You can take the water taxi over from Fells Point (landing #8) to landing #10 or you can drive over and park in any spot marked "Visitor" or in the "F" lot.

The green is where the designated visitor spaces are. Those are marked "visitor" on the pavement. Watch out for 'reserved' or handicap. The purple shaded in area is one of the employee lots which is available for us to park in. The Blue marker next to the building is the entrance to the meeting space.

The speakers were good and knowledgable of PhoneGap. I have no doubt many of the attendees gained good knowledge of PhoneGap and its ability offer the Web Platform as a development environment while not having to sacrifice on device capabilities.

I thought it was interesting presentation. Learned some of inside detail about PhoneGap and other unique tools. However, I wish we could have more demo on proper methods to build an app with PhoneGap.

Feb. 29 is great - it's the same day as the Baltimore TechBreakfast, but that shouldn't matter - that's in the morning. Bagels in the morning and Beer at night - why go home?

Alex - we already have a meetup in January.

How does everyone feel about moving this up an hour to 6pm? Does that provide enough time to get there after work?
