Saturday Game Night

Our Saturday game night. We'll play various geeky board and card games. All attendees are welcome to bring games of their own, and we'll all decide what to play. If enough people are there to warrant it, we can split into two or more groups.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

-I am setting a limit of 10 people, including myself, as that is about all I can accommodate. If you REALLY don't think you're going to be able to make it, please don't RSVP Yes. And if your plans change, please change your RSVP to No as soon as you can, so others can join in.

- As always, one or more beagles may be in the house, so plan accordingly if you are allergic.

- While some refreshments MAY be on hand, for the most part, I ask people to bring stuff that they'd be willing to share. There's no requirement for this, but chipping in is always appreciated.

I'm going on record too saying I agree with Jesse about Merlin and Percival. Both are a waste of energy. However, don't rule out intuition in that game. It's not all logic.

Im going on record as saying i dont like Avalon due to the Merlin and Perceval factor. Why? Cuz its random psychology, there is little to no strategy. People assume that other people are always paying attention to EVERYTHING, and using logic AND a straight forward approach to voting, yet none of that is guaranteed, and the fact is people often dont play that way, especially new comers.

Also I hate when people expect you to think that people arent trying to prevent others from guessing their loyalty by sometimes voting against their own team.

Asking "why would you do that?" is completely ridiculous as well as answering the question honestly or not.

Is kinda pointless because there are strong arguments for and against each way of playing.

There are just too many random factors to cast blame or have any bragging rights for playing well.

Its a fun little social game but its ruined if people try to analyze it, which always happens.

We definitely broke the play limit last night; I believe there were at least 6 plays, maybe up to 9. I was in four of those games and was dealt the Assassin THREE times, and a FOURTH time that we had to redo off the bat because I was the only Evil person that opened their eyes. So that role loves me. I was very pleased to have correctly guessed Merlin TWICE and won the game for Evil. The third game, Evil still won, but when I guessed just for fun it turned out to be Oberron. D'oh. Merlin was also guessed correctly in the one game I lost (I was Percival and did a shitty job of taking suspicion off of the real Merlin).

So, at least three correct Merlin guesses out of 6-9 plays. Possibly more since I don't know how the games I wasn't in were resolved. Actually, Good did not win a single time last night, even with Oberron involved.

Pret a porter was an interesting challenge. Forced you to prioritize and multitask while keeping a sense of balance. As usual getting modifiers early on is a key to winning.but I really like how there are many different strategies you can adapt. Part of my strategy was to keep a low maintenance fee which in theory seemed good, until the game proved how useful certain workers and buildings can be.

Never thought I'd like a game based on Fashion lol, it was dirty fight. Thanks to Wes for hosting it.

Pret-a-Porter (from Wes) and Resistance: Avalon (from Blaine) for sure tonight. Wes would also like to play Glory to Rome, and I concur. I don't have anything I'm desperate to play from my own stuff. I did just get my last math trade item in, a game called Uchronia which is supposed to be a lighter version of Glory to Rome, so maybe this is the night to do it. Or Tanto Cuore! Please?

Uchronia isn't lighter than GtR, it's just as complex. It even adds a few things, buildings in GtR have one ability while in Uchronia they can be upgraded.

The thing about Uchronia is that it changes the main mechanic, changes how attack cards work, and changes game ending conditions, which makes it have less player interaction and a lot more downtime than GtR

Not to go into too much detail,

In GtR, each round the starting player gets one action. Then each player can draw/play/use cards-in-play but what options they have for the round are effected by what the first player did. It's only the first player each round who has the freedom to do any action. After everyone has gone, round ends, first player passes, etc.

But in Uchronia, there are no rounds. Instead, after you play a card it stays infront of you and isn't discarded until the start of your next turn. When it's your turn, you look at all cards played by previous players and you get to take every possible action based on what they played on their turn.

I haven't played them yet, but I'm not sure how I feel about Uchronia's differences.

As a reminder, anyone can request a particular game from my collection to play at the meetups. Here is a link to my collection (it is always up to date, however I mark some items as "Owned" that I don't have in my possession quite yet, due to trades and store orders I have not picked up):

    http://boardgamegeek.com/collec...

Look some of them up and see if they're your style. I am sure that anyone else in the group who has a lot of games will take requests as well.
