I asked Ray, the guy who runs Houstongamers.org, to give me some information about his group since we have people who are always looking for other gaming opportunities. Below is what Ray said about his group; for more information check out www.houstongamers.org.
We're just a bunch of boardgamers that get together to play social
boardgames. We're a mix of styles, from serious wargamers gamers to
totally light card gamers. Our gaming sessions tend to fall somewhere
in between, meaning we play a lot of 60-90 minute games. We're used
to teaching every game we play since there's almost always a new
player or a new game. You can show up empty handed, ready to learn,
or with a fist full of games, ready to teach. If there's a game you
want to play but don't own, there's a "Game Request Line" on the club
website and if someone can bring it, they'll sign off on your request.
People also use the forums to drum up interest in a game that might
require some advance preparations (say, you want to play Die Macher
but only with people that read the rules online in advance).
We usually kick off at noon and stay til they kick us out, so you can
pretty much show up any time and game for as long as you want.
