BACSIM

  • Jun 7, 2014 · 12:00 PM
  • St. Marks

Its BACSIM time so come join Grant and the BACSIM crew at St. Marks in Tonawanda. People generally start rolling in around noon and the gaming lasts until the last people leave - generally late in the evening. Bringing food and (non-alcoholic) drink is fine and usually at some point pizza or subs are ordered so bring cash if you want to partake. Refrigerators and a kitchen are available if you are feeling culinarily inclined.  There is no structure to the game playing so just bring whatever you might want to play from your collection and see if you can find another player. As Grant put it: "The most popular game at BACSIM is the 'What Should We Play Now?' game." Its a great place to get those longer games to the table. And don't be afraid, its not all wargames and 18xx, there are plenty of Euro games that hit the table. I've played many of the same games at BACSIM that I've played at our Wednesday meetups. Come on out and play!

I have a piece from the Manhattan project game that was found on the floor. Not sure whose game it was, but I'll have it at the next meet.

Thanks Grant. I think I was the only one who pulled out my copy so probably mine. :). I'll see you at the 28th event and grab it there thanks.

      June 8, 2014

    • Joel C.

Grant. Not sure if I'm going to make next BACSIM (wife MAY be dragging me to a wedding)... Any chance I can grab the piece from you another way? I work right on the boulevard near the 290 and can get most places easy. By the way, what piece was it?

Met and gamed with lots of new people. Got to play a few of games (Cavera, Splendor, The Speicherstadt) I've been wanting to try plus a couple more. Hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did and comes back again.

It was awesome to meet you both on Saturday! Sorry I wasn't able to get a game in with ya Joel! Hopefully next time.

Definitely Adam. I'll be at the June 28th full day event as well. Looking forward to it.

I was glad I got a chance to play Caverna, and I would play it again -- but, no, it will not replace Agricola for me. The path you take is the same as every other player (maybe like the family version of 'gric). I like the challenges of getting rotten Occupations and unfulfillable Minor Improvements. The game is ever-changing that way and sometimes the 'gric gods favor you compatible cards :)

  • Rodney

What did you think of Caverna Midge? Better than Agricola?

    June 8, 2014

  • Grant L.

    Great meet. Big crowd.

How do I get into the building?

    June 7, 2014

    • Alice

A sign would have been nice. :( I don't even know if I'm at the right place

      June 7, 2014

  • Alice

Are y'all still there? I'll be there around 4:30 but IDK if it's still going on. I assume so?

    June 7, 2014

    • Mark A.

I just left and it was going strong

      June 7, 2014

    • Joel C.

Yes at least 20+ people here

      June 7, 2014

  • Midge

Does someone own Caverna? I'd love to try it.

    June 6, 2014

    • Mark A.

Andy runs it from time to time

      June 6, 2014

    • Mike

I'll have it with me. It's a great next step from Agricola.

      June 6, 2014

  • Barbara

I don't even know what Euro games are. I have UPWORDS-does anyone play that?

    June 6, 2014

    • Midge

Oh, Barbara, you are going to have fun learning new games

      1 · June 6, 2014

    • Joel C.

Euro-games are a loose definition for games that rely on strategic actions usually with multiple paths to victory, player-to-player interaction, etc. Again, every professional game reviewer defines them slightly differently but the name comes from the fact that in the 90's German game designers started releasing these types of games first (that weren't about roll and move, pure luck, simple one-off actions, major repetition, etc). You will have a blast trying out some new stuff like Midge said !

Nels, Kevin, and I are going to do the BKN "triple play" on Saturday. Three players, three simultaneous plays of the game. Each guy gets to play both sides against a different player at the same time.

    June 6, 2014

  • NickAnner

Although i suppose BKN is what should be on the table

    June 6, 2014

  • NickAnner

I will be there sometime between noon and five.

What are the chances I could get into a COIN game?

    June 6, 2014

  • Joel

The church, which provides the hall, ask that everyone who attends consider giving a small donation to help offset some of the costs for the lights, heat and or A/C. I collect the donations so please find me. Thank you.

    June 6, 2014

  • Grant L.

I probably don't mention this often enough, but for the new attendees -- don't be concerned about not knowing any particular game or games. A substantial portion of the games are being taught to one or more of the players, and often the game is being played by all the players for the first time. In general, BACSIM is set up to run longer games than the weekly nighttime meets can handle, but we're good with any type of games, so playing a large number of 1 hour (or less) games is common as well. Show up, see what you can get into, and go nuts gaming your guts out! :-)

    • Grant L.

8 or 9 pm, but 11 pm is not unusual if we get a good crowd.

      June 6, 2014

    • Joel C.

Awesome ! Sounds like a great time. Told my wife expect me home Sunday. Haha.

      June 6, 2014

  • Grant L.

Originally -- Buffalo Area Conflict SIMulations. Now, it's just really just a pronounceable name. For your first time, bring a few dollars to give to Joel for the church hall, snacks and/or a water bottle if you need them (there is a water fountain), and a willingness to try new games. Bring a few games if you're looking to run something.

I'm new with group, what does BACSIM stand for? What should I bring for my first event?

    June 5, 2014

  • Joel C.

So I just got... Suburbia, Manhattan Project, and Small World in the mail today. Never played them but looking to this weekend. I'll have them with me.

    June 5, 2014

    • Adam W.

I own all three of them and they are superb! Would be totally down to jump in on any of these with ya!

      1 · June 5, 2014

  • Midge

Played Manhattan Project once. Would enjoy playing it again. You will certainly get takers for Suburbia (and probably Small World also).

    1 · June 5, 2014

    • Joel C.

I haven't even played with you guys yet but I'm super pumped to have found a group with those same types of game interests... versus my constant nagging of my weekly play group to do more! They groan when I get new games because they always want to fall back on Catan. (which I have been forced to play literally 200+ times) This is going to be a great day/group to really share my passion for playing with others that seem to appreciate the hobby as much !

There is a parking lot off of Bryant Street. The only open entrance to the hall is the one facing the lot.

    June 4, 2014

  • Joel C.

Do we park in the church lot or only on the street? Which door is entry? Thanks.

    June 3, 2014

  • Grant L.

The church had a refrigerator available, so you can bring food. Early birds arrive at 11 am. Main crowd starts showing up between noon and one. If ya show up mid afternoon, expect to have wait a bit for a game to end before another will begin.

    June 3, 2014

  • Adam W.

Looking forward to checking this out for the first time as well this Saturday. Planning on bringing some games as well! Anything else us newbies should know?

    June 3, 2014

  • Grant L.

Generally speaking I would recommend new attendees to bring a few games they'd like to play, and see what's going on. Ask around at the meet and see what's being played to get a feel for who plays what. Generally speaking, any type and style of game will get played at BACSIM.

As a first timer, what game(s) should I bring? I have some of the staples (Catan, Pandemic, Munchkin, Zombie dice). Plus some MTG, Coloretto, etc.

    June 3, 2014

    • Joel C.

I have always wanted to play pandemic. It's one of those games where I always buy the "competitive" and have never just sprung for a collaborative. (I'm a first timer at the event too)

      June 3, 2014

    • Joel C.

I'm gonna stock a bunch of games in my car and then I have them on hand if no one else brings them.

      June 3, 2014

  • Grant L.

Early arrivals show up at 11 am. The main crowd drifts in between noon and one.

I'm new to this group. I've had a bit of info passed to me. But what time are you guys there? What games should I bring. I have a large collection (boardgamegeek myronborgan) I plan on coming an would love to bring some games that others may not have. I'm also looking to trade if anyone is interested. Add me on boardgamegeek and message me if you want to trade.
