We do have the option to make your entire list moderated (so that when someone posts, the org/assts must approve the post before it is sent out to the list). But if you moderate, it will be for the entire group -- you cannot do it on a member-by-member basis.

Which is a shame. Most other mailing list software allows you to moderate specific users. If you have a busy mailing list, and a few problem users, you do NOT want to have to moderation to the whole list. That would be a nightmare.

Hi again,

I'm starting to warm up (like HMM says, "thaw") to the idea -- I feel I'm getting over the fact that without proper communication of how this all fits in the Meetup strategy, it looks like the business organizers perform is supporting the technological changes Meetup is imposing.

However... as I said, I'm getting over it. Mostly due to the fact I can't stop myself from trying to figure out what I need to do based on what I can do... :)

Two questions:

Will the digests we receive, if we've selected this option, show all conversations or just the first one?

Will all conversations (similar or same as digests) be posted to the Messages Archive, or just the first message?

Thanks,

Trish

Sorry if this has already been covered in this thread or elsewhere, but...

It would be nice if emails were sent 'To' my actual email address instead of the way you are doing it. (-announce...) All of these are getting caught by my spam system now...

I just noticed that AOs and Orgs have the option to remove a member from the mailing list. So that can be a solution for problem members.

Unfortunately, less than ideal. It's those who have useful thigns to contribute yet occasionally need guidance in how to express it that are common. I don't want to exclude people. Problem members often benefit by seeing how pleasant discourse happens. Kicking them off the mailing list doesn't do that (and often merely engenders resentment).

Thanks Hilary.

I can't find this function anywhere! Can you tell where it is? It doesn't seem to be under Group Tools tabs: Settings or Communication

--

Without seeing the functionality, my first reaction to this is I'm worried AOs can remove members from the list, and otherwise do things without the knowledge or consent of the Organizer...

Not really fitting into our structure, which is:

  • The Organizer provides a forum for anyone to participate in the group as an AO at any time, there's no real expectation or obligation of the AO, except that if they create an event for the group that they follow through
  • AOs come and go based on what they want to do with the group which really consists of leading events of their choosing, coordinating with other events (and events that are being considered for dates, using Notes) and includes using the Meetup tool to communicate with the group (announce), work out the details (using Message boards for all to see), and then send final messages to the sub-group of participants relative to the specific event
  • In my groups, my AOs are not really involved in the overall management of the group and they are prone to sometimes use weird ways of communicating (i.e., set up an event, or note, to communicate a change to another event) which the Organizer (me) ends up fixing or monitoring and then deleting after the fact (while keeping up morale and treating the AOs well as they are providing events for the group and don't understand -- and are not interested really in learning -- the nuances of the tool)

Hi,

I cannot experiment with the mailing list feature because my understanding is that if I turn it on for my group, I won't be able to turn it off.

What does it mean to "remove a member from the mailing list"? That he cannot send, he cannot receive, or both?

As an "Organizer," I am glad that my AO's">AO's cannot change the e-mail setting, which I hear on this message board is an irreversible step.

But under that setting option, it does appear that an AO can turn off the message board? I don't want my group's message board turned off by an AO who might go experimenting with settings. If the message board is turned off, can it be turned back on?

Okay, I tested it (and got screen shots, which I will post later) but I agree that it is less than ideal.

I removed Timothy from the mailing list (for the reason that I disliked the name, "dagnabbit.")

What I expected was that he would be removed, and I'd see a link that said "Reinstate in mailing list" or something.

But no. There was no way for me to reinstate him. He just rejoined on his own.

Bah. This one still needs work.

Oh, I'm an AO in the group where we are testing this. So yes, this functionality is open to AOs.

I don't believe that is true. I thought that Medina turned it on for the Summit and turned it off again.

However, that is part of the reason why I've been doing screen shots from my tests. So that other organizers can see what we've been seeing.

Good questions. We're still testing this. Keith, can you give us the answer?

Huh. I'm an AO, and that section was not greyed out for me. However, though I could happily click radio buttons, the submit button was grayed out so I could do nothing.

This is an Organizer only function for now.

I guess I don't understand why all the "petty" changes meetup does....its aggravating and we pay for consistency no? Again 45.00 for 3 months is high and I'm constantly havin to deal with "creative ingenuity" from eager staff members who need to poll things in email and then decide from a higher good rather than experimenting with my money.
