Originally published in 1978, this is the first novel written by award-winning British author, Ian McEwan. The Cement Garden is a beautifully woven and extremely dark tale of childhood and lost innocence.

A perverse but enchanting book; beautifully written and perfectly constructed, this is a story about a family of four children who find themselves abruptly orphaned while living in the concrete soul-less urban desert of 1970s England. In the relentless summer heat, the children retreat into a shadowy, isolated world, in the increasingly claustrophobic family house. Without adult guidance, they find their own strange and unsettling ways of fending for themselves, sliding into sloth and then perversity.

Despite the shocking nature of the story, it never feels unbelievable (and that's probably what makes it so disturbing). The characters are drawn so convincingly that the reader, despite the perverse nature of the their actions, is drawn into their dark world and sees it from their point of view. The Cement Garden is a modern classic that raises disturbing perspectives on love, the family and the "ties that bind."
