About The Book: Silas Marner is the shortest and easiest to read of Eliot's novels and yet it is has such beauty and complexity that it is a real gem. The tale of Silas Marner, the embittered miser who loses his precious hoard of gold and finds an orphaned little girl on his hearth is heart-warming but unsentimental. He adopts her and she transforms his life. In time we see that their fate is mysteriously entangled with that of the two sons of the village Squire. Eliot sets the story among the rural working class and they live and breathe as real people. The novel is a tender and charming adult fairy tale of sin, repentance and the power of love. George Eliot displays sophisticated control of the narrative as it gradually reveals causes and connections and to this adds layers of wry humour and rich symbolism.
