Announcing a new Meetup for Book Club London East and Essex!
The Book: Silas Marner - by George Eliot (for your Christmas Present List?)
When: February[masked] 7:00pm
The Venue: 184 George Lane South Woodford London E18 1AY
About The Book: Silas Marner is the shortest and easiest to read of Eliot's novels and yet it is has such beauty and complexity that it is a real gem. The tale of Silas Marner, the embittered miser who loses his precious hoard of gold and finds an orphaned little girl on his hearth is heart-warming but unsentimental. He adopts her and she transforms his life. In time we see that their fate is mysteriously entangled with that of the two sons of the village Squire. Eliot sets the story among the rural working class and they live and breathe as real people. The novel is a tender and charming adult fairy tale of sin, repentance and the power of love. George Eliot displays sophisticated control of the narrative as it gradually reveals causes and connections and to this adds layers of wry humour and rich symbolism.
We have a monthly book discussion and various general social events at least monthly e.g. Sunday lunch pub roast, occasional movie, picnic in the summer (ever optimistic for the British summer) etc.
The book discussion Meetups take place on Mondays though I am now trying out Sundays aternoons occasionally for people who might find a Monday difficult. Obviously you'll get more out of it if you've read the book and we won't hold back on discussing the ending which may result in spoilers - but it's not compulsory to have finished the book to attend.
Hope you'll be joining us soon for either or both the book meetups & the socials and please do make suggestions if you'd like to try a particular venue or activity.
