Chela Metzger and her Amazing Models

• Chela Metzger teaches historical book structures at UT and is going to share some of her favorite binding styles including a multimedia extravaganza involving images and books we can handle, examine and try to imitate. Bring camera, paper and pen to take notes, and enjoy the dynamic, multidimensional presentation of this outstanding book scholar. Chela is looking forward to sharing her slides and models of account book bindings and hearing what folks have been up to since she last had the pleasure of visiting!

Austin Book Workers (Austin Book Arts Meetup) meet the second Thursday of every month, September through May. Each meeting is a class on techniques, tools, and talent. Great creative energy.

Promoting books and book arts in central Texas...

Book Arts Fair
Fourth of July weekend is Book Arts Fair in central Texas. Austin Museum of Art graciously lets us use their Art School facilities at beautiful Laguna Gloria for this free event, open to the public.

Austin Book Workers and friends demonstrate book making, book structures, the history of the book, paper making, marbling, suminagashi, paste paper making, gold tooling, calligraphy, letter press printing, and making miniature books. There are several hands-on areas where kids of all ages can enjoy creative play.

Under Cover Friends!
During the summer, when we don't have regular meetings, sign up for our book exchange.

In September we meet and share all the items we've made over the summer. Don't miss the September meetup. See fresh books made within the last three months by Austin book artists.

Through programs, workshops, and education, Austin Book Workers aim is to make central Texans -- and the world! -- more loving of books and book arts.

The common thread among us is the love of books. As a group, we explore everything from artists books to fine bindings. Our members are diverse: bookbinders, conservators, calligraphers, professionals, dabblers, students, artists, and people who just love books.

Our dues are still $12 a year for membership, since 1984.

You can also join Austin Book Workers by bringing a check to a meeting or through our Membership Form, by printing, filling out, and mailing us the form to the address on the form from the website www.austinbookworkers.org.

Chela Metzger spread a groaning board of full-size models of historical bindings starting with an Ethiopian (coptic) style with wooden covers up through an actual 19th century commercial case binding. The images and discussion focused on accounting books of massive proportions from European archives. Many were beautiful in their concave spines and soft round covers and uncut fore-edges worn by time and use. There was a lively discussion with questions and conjecture. Makes you want to make something substantial.
