The Lowland-Jhumpa Lahiri

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning, best-selling author of The Namesake comes an extraordinary new novel, set in both India and America, that expands the scope and range of one of our most dazzling storytellers: a tale of two brothers bound by tragedy, a fiercely brilliant woman haunted by her past, a country torn by revolution, and a love that lasts long past death. It is Jhumpa Lahiri at the height of her considerable powers. Booklist*, Library Journal*

Forget to mention NPR the morning after our book group reported that India is the world's largest democracy with 820 million voters. It's election is for six weeks. How smart instead of months or years. See you in May.

    April 15, 2014

    • Leslie

I believe they have a period of 6 weeks to cast their votes.

Hi all. I just discovered that my emails from this group have been bouncing again. I was kind of curious why I hadn't been getting notifications, but I guess I've been too busy to really think about it. Anyways, I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. Feel free to park in our driveway or on the street. My home number is[masked] if you get lost. See you tomorrow!

I have terrible head cold, should stay away. I have listened to Lowland, so wish to hear grp discussion. This bug seems to be affecting sleep/muscle soreness too. Regret the late reply, I thought I'd be better.

Hello Karen, could you please provide a list of what folks are bringing thus far and I will select something to round it out. I only know of a few delicacies being brought to the meeting -- meatballs, italian bread, chicken strips (Indian flavored) and a quiche. Thank you. I will buy the ingredients on Saturday. Marina

I like that movies and events are also offered through this amazing group. Unfortunately I can not make the movie Friday night.

    March 26, 2014

  • Connie L.

There is a movie this Friday set in 1960's Calcutta- might be interesting to see. MAHANAGAR [THE BIG CITY]
    March 28 (Friday)
Film Screening — 7:30 p.m., Page Hall, 135 Western Avenue, Downtown Campus
Directed by Satyajit Ray (India, 1963, 122 minutes, b/w, in Bengali with English subtitles, and English)
Starring Anil Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee, Jaya Bhaduri

In Calcutta during the 1960s, a young housewife takes a job as a salesperson to help support her family. That decision puts her in conflict with her children, her in-laws, and eventually her husband. Famed Indian director Satyajit Ray won the Best Director Award at the 1964 Berlin International Film Festival for this celebrated landmark of world cinema. Shown in a crisp new print on Bluray.

    Laura and Lynn,
Thanks for your comments as they helped underline for new members the open forum concept of this group. I provided the link to the talk in case anyone wanted to choose to watch a philosopher and neuroscientist talk at a prestigious conference about science and morality.

Where is the menu pull down tab located?

    March 17, 2014

    • Leslie

Try it on your labtop or desktop. Not sure you can do it on you phone. Go to the meeting for this month's book. Along the top row menu bar click on MORE and then FILES. The driving directions are in the files. It is explained on the monthly meeting page.

      March 17, 2014

    • Marina

The operative word is "more". Thank you for orienting me. I didn't know that the files were under this tab. :)

One of the things I love most about this group is that the "dynamic" is quite open. Often our meetings include "no-holds-barred" discussions with members expressing their beliefs, life experiences, traumas, and personal connections with the literature, including politics and religion.

I think the door swings both ways. A person is free to express her opinions about religion, dogma, Darwin, and another person is equally free to put forth her own differing beliefs and express her reactions to what she's hearing. Vive la difference!

Anyone in the group could recommend something that might be of interest to other members of the group as an intellectual experience. That does not mean they are insulting other members of the group. I'm sorry that your beliefs are causing you to leave the group. In an open forum, such as this group is, we may all express ourselves.

      March 15, 2014

    • Leslie

Mara-Thanks for the recommendation. I'll give a listen to the Ted Talk. I enjoyed your book group contributions and look forward to our next meeting.

I mentioned a book about training our brains to take in the good. "Hardwiring for Happiness " by Rick Hanson is worth a read.
