Crossing to Safety - Wallace Stegner

Wallace Stegner [masked]) may be better known for his 1972 Pulitzer Prize-winner, "Angle of Repose," but it's his last novel, "Crossing to Safety," which quietly celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, that keeps drawing readers back. This is the kind of book – the apt first selection for Will Schwalbe's "The End of Your Life Book Club,"by the way – that reminds you why reading is such a wonderful solace and escape. Story moves between Vermont and Wisconsin as it follows the lives of two couples who form a fast and lifelong friendship during the mid-1930 depression. A powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.

Please bring a dish for the book group brunch. If you know what you'll be bringing please post it in the comment box when you RSVP.

 2014 Wait List and Cancellation Policy: Please be respectful of our members on the waiting list and cancel your reservations by 6 p.m. on Friday for our Sunday book group. Members with frequent no shows and/or later or frequent cancellations will be moved to the wait list to give priority to our members who consistenty honor their reservations and to those people on the wait list and our many newcomers who'd like to come to our book discussions.

There is a $1.00 Meet-up fee collected at each meeting.

    No problems with delays -- I took 9 & 20 out of Albany. Terrific lunch and stimulating discussion -- perfect summer afternoon -- didn't even rain until I was almost all the way home, & now I don't even have to water my garden! Hooray!
    Thanks, all.

    We had an extremely interesting conversation about what constitutes friendship, Stegner's pastoral writing style, the ravages of terminal illness, like cancer.

    Very long delays on Patroon Island Bridge, one lane each way... see below for directions to Laura’s to avoid delay- TAKE DUNN MEMORIAL BRIDGE AND ROUTE 20 EAST FROM ALBANY;
    FROM THE NORTH TAKE ROUTE 4/TROY, Turn left at Columbia Turnpike (Route 9, Route 20)

    On Route 20, proceed 4-10 miles through East Greenbush, depending on where you enter. Refer to the dropdown menu; MORE, then FILE for the rest of the directions, including parking info.

    I want to give everyone a little warning... there will be road work at the intersection of 787 and Route 90 East all weekend. There may be delays, so you may want to take an alternate route... or be prepared to sit for ten to twenty minutes. Carol- no cancellations and no openings, even if someone cancels. I am already quite tight on space and left it open for 12 thinking we would end up with ten. So sorry and hope to see you soon!

    Hi all. I'm sadly going to have to cancel due to a family medical emergency situation. I'm sorry to do this last minute. Hope someone from the waitlist can move up.

    One more thing... it looks like we will have a healthy brunch- lots of proteins and salads. So far, I only see one dessert. If anyone hasn't decided what to bring- something sweet might be nice.

    A very complicated book, very beautifully written. It moves a bit too slowly for my liking -- I'm about halfway through and getting impatient, but I look forward to finishing it this weekend sitting on the party barge at our camp on Piseco Lake -- a perfect place to ponder a book like this!
    Looking forward to the meeting and the diverse discussion...

      If you are willing to travel 90+ miles to Hamilton County, the party barge seats 10+ and you'd all be welcome to meet on it! Bring your own life jackets!

      I did finish the book over the weekend, read several reviews and am going back through to find passages that particularly appeal. Still think the book drags a bit in the middle, but its enjoyable because its so beautifully written! Looking forward to Sunday!
