April '14 Book Selection: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

All: I just called Five Points to confirm our time tonight and they've double -booked the room. They have a surprise birthday in the room yet they remember speaking with us.  So, to keep things close we'll move it back to Midtown Dessertery since it's in the same shopping center/parking lot for tonight.

The group decided to give ourselves an additional week since this is a long read (and since many people will be traveling Memorial Day weekend). We will meet to discuss this book Monday May 5th and then we'll have 6-ish weeks to read the June book. Hope this helps people get through it! :)

Everyone says this is THE book of 2013! The Goldfinch topped so many "best books of" lists last year, I won't bother naming them all. Suffice to say, it's worth the time we'll put in reading it.

Check out the link below for a summary and reviews as well as a few more articles about Tartt herself.

We hope to see you in April to talk about this important book!

Two book clubs might be one too many for me.. I have not started the book yet But I heard it won the Pulitzer Prize. That is impressive.

I am so drawn into this book. The protagonist's downward spiral is heartbreaking yet I can't put it down. Great choice.

How do I get added to the FB group? I won't be able to make this month's meeting since I will be out on a business trip but I am reading the book. Am I the only one that so far does not like it? It reads so S-L-O-W!!!!

Lisa, I think the beginning of the book does start off a little slow before you understand what is going on. I liked the book, but I didn't love the book. Unfortunately, I will be out of town for the discussion but I do want to hear about it afterwards. The facebook page was a good idea. Thanks, Cynthia.

I really enjoyed this book and was looking forward to the discussion, but I finally synced up all my calendars and I will be in Seattle! See you all in June and Happy Mother's Day!

Hi Jamie. With the new FB page we can continue the discussion after the meeting. It won't be the same, but you won't miss out. I don't know if we'll post during the meeting, but that is possible. Check in if you are able.

There are 23 people in the FB group. Once you are added, you may respond to a post or start a new post. You may also add members from your FB list.

I've started a FB group for us. The only way you can join is if someone adds you to the group. FB might be an easier way to have conversations to share ideas (or even actual books). The FB format will enable us to continue a discussion from a previous meeting, which will be wonderful for those who could not attend. If you want to be added to the group, send me a "friend" request on FB. (You can delete me after you are added to the group.) My FB picture has two little girls on it, and the large photo is of Pilot Mountain.

Can't find the book - all copies are checked out at all of the Forsyth libraries, with numerous hold requests. Just don't have funds to buy books this year, especially if it turns out that the book is not worth the $ (Interestings, our JAN book, was a $25-waste).

Finally found the book via Mt Airy library, however need to find time to read it in less than 2weeks (limited-time check-out); so far it seems interesting read.
