I can't create a list of "top ten favorites" - the books just do not break out that way! So here are my "top eight," followed by another six books I very much enjoyed. So ... we have read 34 books over the past three years, and I would rate fourteen of those as Terrific or Really Really Good.
A Fine Balance - simply the best.
Suitable Boy - wonderful book.
Death of Vishnu - one of the first Indian novels I read, and still a favorite. You can smell the chapattis cooking.
Toss of a Lemon - moving story of a pukka Brahmin widow and her family.
Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard - funny and engaging.
City of Joy - nonfiction, completely gripping story about life in a Calcutta slum
Shantaram - incredible novel, based on a true story of a convict who escaped from an Australian prison and made a new life for himself in Mumbai.
Sacred Games - dauntingly large and densely written - but once I finally engaged, I was completely absorbed in the book.
And another group, also favorites.....
The Space Between Us
The Sari Shop
Song of the Cuckoo Bird
House of Blue Mangoes
