This month, I have decided to take a break from the idea of doing a book in honor of the month (especially since there aren't any real holidays in August). I know that I had talked to some of you about doing Zeitoun, in memory of Hurricane Katrina, but after reading two more serious books so far this summer, I thought that we could use something a little more light-hearted. I heard this was funny (though also sad at times) and a pretty easy read - great for the beach! I will keep Zeitoun on the list to do later. The Art of Racing in the Rain
by Garth Stein
If you've ever wondered what your dog is thinking, Stein's novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain
, offers an answer. Enzo is a lab terrier mix plucked from a farm outside Seattle to ride shotgun with race car driver Denny Swift as he pursues success on the track and off. Denny meets and marries Eve, has a daughter, Zo?, and risks his savings and his life to make it on the professional racing circuit. Enzo, frustrated by his inability to speak and his lack of opposable thumbs, watches Denny's old racing videos, coins koanlike aphorisms that apply to both driving and life, and hopes for the day when his life as a dog will be over and he can be reborn a man.
