T-Dot Bookclub June Meetup

                                                                RSVP's OPEN ON MAY 6th!

Hey hey Readers!

Do you watch the Big Bang Theory?  Me too!  Do you like space stuff?  Me too! I've read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, like, a million times.

Okay so maybe these next two books aren't quite up to that standard, but they're pretty great!  Space!

An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, by Chris Hadfield (our very own Canadian astronaut!)

and

The Sparrow: A Novel, by Mary Doria Russell

Happy Space Reading!

----------------------------------------

If the RSVP list is full don't hesitate to jump on the waiting list.  You'll be surprised how fast the list turns over as the big day approaches (especially the last 24hrs!).  So if you DO wind up on the waiting list you'd better keep your calender clear.

----------------------------------------

Just a brief note on our methods and madness:

The point of choosing more then one book is to engage as many different tastes as possible.  The added bonus is that it gives us a platform for discussion - which is why the books we choose are always thematically similar.

We don't expect you to always have the time to read both monthly book selections.  You can rest assured that our conversations are so deliciously booky in general, that you really only need to be a lover of the written word to find something to get down and dirty with.

That said, its entirely up to you how much you're going to be bothered by spoilers, or discussion about books you haven't read, because we don't hold back!  [aka: SPOILER ALERT]

So if you want to come out - even if you haven't read the books - by all means c'mon out!   Even folks who haven't read any of the books on offer that month at all have left having had a great time!

* All of our books are chosen as a collective at each meeting. We're like the Borg that way.

I was looking forward to coming. I was not a no-show.
I showed up early and realized I had to go up fire escape stairs? Is this correct. Those stairs look so steep I was afraid to break my neck coming down. I have a mild physical disability though I do not need assistive devices , I didn't want to take the risk. Is there another way to get up to where you guys meet? I am kinda disappointed that this has happened. :(

Hi Daniela, I'm sorry you had trouble tonight. There is a door to the building to the right of those fire escape stairs you found, that would have been the way in to the building. Frankly I hadn't ever noticed the fire escape stairs you mentioned until tonight. Maybe you can give us a try next month.

Oh. I saw the door there but it said it was the door to the hotel (or something) so I wasn't sure if that was the right one. Evidently, I notice things other people don't. haha. Anyway, I won't be able to make it in July but do you have a book set up for August yet?

It'll be my first meeting too but I'm pretty sure it says somewhere you don't need to read the books unless you want to later and hate spoilers!

I actually just finished Hadfield's book. I found it started quite slowly but is worth finishing.

Definitely will sign up for this as soon as RSVP opens.
I've never attended a meet-up with you guys but this sounds like a great one to start with. :)

How come the RSVP is closed already ?

RSVP's open on May 6th. I've found that when RSVP's are open too soon that a lot of folks sign up right away but don't actually follow through when the event date actually comes up. The purpose of posting the event early is so people can read ahead if they want to, which makes people more likely to commit.

Big Bang Theory is a great show! Come on now. :) Glad to hear a good review for The Sparrow! And now the question - can the adorable astronaut write? Well, we'll find out about that, but he sure can sing. :)

I hate Big Bang Theory (if any of the writers made an original joke their heads would implode) but The Sparrow is one of my favourite Science Fiction novels ever - Mary Doria Russell is such a thoughtful writer. The sequel is remarkably good as well. Not sure Hadfield will compare well - he's adorable, but can he write?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
