Indian Horse - Laurie's choice

Saul Indian Horse has hit bottom. His last binge almost killed him, and now he’s a reluctant resident in a treatment centre for alcoholics, surrounded by people he’s sure will never understand him. But Saul wants peace, and he grudgingly comes to see that he’ll find it only through telling his story.

I've just finished reading Indian Horse. Wow! It was a hard read, and brought tears to my eyes several times. I could relate to Saul's finding escape in reading and the joy of hockey. I learned a lot through this book, that I only knew through news stories before. News stories leave the emotion out, but reading about Saul's story put the emotion back into those news articles. Richard Wagamese writes the story with a poignancy and a depth of feeling that brings home the truth of our past and an understanding of the effects of the residential schools had on our Native population like no news story ever could. I am very glad to have read Indian Horse and I would like, now, to read Richard Wagamese's memoir as well.

I am always amazed at how inciteful and interesting the comments are at each meeting. I am looking forward to finishing this book even more now. One comment that really hit home for me was the comparison of how Saul found an escape or a form of sanctuary through his love for hockey and how we, as readers, find a similar type of escape through the books that we read. That is one of the reasons why I started reading again, with the added bonus of learning something. Being able to share and learn and listen with the rest of you is a gift. Thanks to all of you for sharing your gifts.

Yes I agree Blair. As I recall, the character Saul also enjoyed reading, which we somehow missed in our discussion last night.

I think you are correct Debra. Some of us misssd a few things lol. In my case it's usually because I stayed up late and fell asleep while reading.

Hope everyone had a great holiday and I wish you all a Happy New Year. I was not able to get the book, so will probably not come to this month's meeting. Next month...

I found this book a quick and sad read though it does have redeeming value at the end. It was a good book and I look forward to discussing it.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
