Again, I missed the meeting! :( I was looking forward to hearing what everyone had to say about this book. Here's my 2 cents worth... For the first several chapters I kept thinking that it was just a bizarre book. I almost decided not to bother reading it, but I really don't like not finishing a book. In the end I'm glad I read it. I found myself getting very angry at the views on women in the book - or at least the views that Hanna was raised with. As the story went on and Hanna struck out on her own, the book became an excellent expose on taking a good hard look at oneself and our beliefs. Hanna discovered that she disagreed with the beliefs she'd been raised with. She discovered herself in the bargain and learned to like herself regardless of what society said about her. I think that's something we really need to think about in today's society. We have a habit of believing what society tells us about ourselves. I'm glad I stuck with the book and I enjoyed it in the end.

Sorry I missed the meeting...life happens...
Anyhow, just wanted to comment on the book, When She Woke.

At first I thought what the heck am I reading, but then I really got into it. I think this could actually happen if we are not careful of who we elect to run our countries and how much we let religion rule our lives and our nations. (With all due respect to any and all who are religious). When the US election was happening last year and leading up to the republican nominations...Michele Bachmann was frightening. When I was reading this book all I could think of was if she were president (Michele Bachmann) of the US of A, this could maybe happen.

I enjoyed how Hanna while serving her sentence and living as a red started to discover the world, life & herself. I also loved how Canadians came to the rescue...Yah Canada!!

This was a good read for me and provoked thought.

    Thanks,
    Paula Grond

a small book with too many thoughts and too many factors. It lost a little bit focus. But it's easy to read.

Got a couple of chapters in and then had technical difficulties, but I finally managed to borrow it as an ebook again so hopefully I'll get through it before Wednesday!
