Hope: A Tragedy by Shalom Auslander

The Organisers invite you to join us for our Book Discussion Evening.

Share views and gain new insights into this months book.

....and to vote for our next book from a list of suggestions from our members.

Drinks and socialising in The Bar from 7.30pm for a 8pm Start in the function room upstairs.

If, as a new member, you need help finding us and becoming acquainted with the group please email the organiser.

*********************************************************

If anyone has a suggestion for our next book please email the details to the message board at... [masked]  Please include a review of the book with your message or better still, tell us in your own words why we should be reading it. Ideally suggestions should be available in paperback (for affordability) not too long or too short [masked] pages seems to work best) and of a decent standard of literature (make your own judgment about that one).

Also please give some thought as to how well the book lends itself to  lively discussion and debate on the night - Such things as a complexity of plot, a variety of themes, philosophical or social issues, well developed characters and perhaps a few unexpected twists and turns.

If you do recommend a book we will ask you to briefly (3 minutes maximum) tell us about the book at the meetup before we put each title to the vote so please come prepared for that. You do not have to chair

Fantastic evening as always, got a lot more out of the discussion than actually reading the book. Fab charing also and I look forward to next month.

Brilliant eve, superb chair, enlightening insights and generally a hilarious book that made a great debate! 'Do you have clear soup Herr Kommandant?'

I can't make it now either! I really enjoyed the book - reminded me a bit of Don Delilo's White Noise!

Can't make it tonight now unfortunately. Managed to catch a bug at work so have been at home all day. Hope it's a good discussion tonight.

Regrettably can't attend because of work. Really enjoyed this read. The book I have enjoyed the most from what I have read with the book club so far.

Yes, I felt the same way. I am looking forward to the discussion. Some parts were funny but I just found it very difficult to get into.

Really didn't enjoy this month's book. However that usually makes for a great discussion, so I'm looking forward to it! Alex

Can I make a little appeal please? I volunteered to escort Ian and his guide dog Riggs to and from New St station when he first joined the club about six months ago. On the occasions I have not attended someone has always kindly stepped into the breach.

Having been a member for quite a while now and getting to know everybody a lot better I now find myself rather regretful that I have to leave at the end and escort Ian back rather than stop in the bar for a further drink and chat.

I am completely happy to continue providing the service of escorting Ian to the meetings, however I wonder if any regular attender who does leave at 10:00 when the meeting finishes is prepared to take over escorting Ian back to New Street to catch his train?

Hi April, I will not be hard to spot as I have my guide dog with me who is very big. I am very grateful for Kevins help getting me to and from the meetings since joining. I would also like to thank people who have offered this service in the past when Kevin has not been able to attend, I am very grateful that people are willing to do this for me. I am hoping that when I move house, I may be able to stay the odd time after the event. Because were I am moving to may be more logical for the bus than the train. I like this bookclub a locked because everybody is very friendly and willing to help. Found it hard to get in to this particular book, however I am looking forward to the discussion.

Can't make it this month due to work, but did read it and wanted to post my 2 cents - I thought it was hilarious, kudos to the nominator.

Stoner by John Williams was nominated by someone a few months ago and I thought it sounded quite interesting but it didn't garner the necessary votes. Here's a link to a review of it in case Jon/Ian/Chris (I'm sorry, I'm terrible with names) wants to nominate it again. Have a great Christmas everyone.

Sadly I missed the last meetup (yesterday) but hope to be at this one. I'm looking forward to it and this will be my first meetup with this group too!

Sorry I will miss out on the January meeting but I will definitely be reading along with Justine's suggestion of "Hope...". I look forward to catching up with everyone in February.
