Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

The Organisers invite you to join us for our Book Discussion Evening.

Share views and gain new insights into this months book.

....and to vote for our next book from a list of suggestions from our members.

Drinks and socialising in The Bar from 7.30pm for a 8pm Start in the function room upstairs.

If, as a new member, you need help finding us and becoming acquainted with the group please email the organiser.

*********************************************************

If anyone has a suggestion for our next book please email the details to the message board at... [masked]  Please include a review of the book with your message or better still, tell us in your own words why we should be reading it. Ideally suggestions should be available in paperback (for affordability) not too long or too short [masked] pages seems to work best) and of a decent standard of literature (make your own judgment about that one).

Also please give some thought as to how well the book lends itself to  lively discussion and debate on the night - Such things as a complexity of plot, a variety of themes, philosophical or social issues, well developed characters and perhaps a few unexpected twists and turns.

If you do recommend a book we will ask you to briefly (3 minutes maximum) tell us about the book at the meetup before we put each title to the vote so please come prepared for that. You do not have to chair

There was problem that evening with a road accident that also snarled up the traffic I got stuck in it to just trying to get home

Hi Sushma next time give me a shout I have some car parking in the jewellery quarter a little walk but not bad and in any case just out of the city its free after 6.
Thanks to everyone who made my firs t meet really enjoyable now I have to read Orlando!

    1 · March 13, 2014

  • Sushma

Very difficult to find parking & so gave up. Expensive too- as I aimed to get early but charges before 7.30. There must be cheaper/better locations surely. Hope it went well.

    March 12, 2014

    • Tony C

Sushma, cheaper / better locations for you (a car driver) would mean more expensive / worse locations for the majority of our regulars who need easy access to public transport. The Vic is a couple of minutes from New St station and bus services to every part of the city. That said, there are plenty of parking facilities also within a short walk of The Vic - Bookclub costs nothing so why not go mad and pay for a couple of hours parking?

There's free on road parking about 4 minute walk away by pad Thai. It's free from 6pm as well. That's where I park and there always seems to be space x

Finished the book tonight! Just that little bit late (maybe that's my life theme?) but still really enjoyed the discussion. I am sure bits of this book will stay with me a long time- several lives perhaps!

Thank you to everyone who came for all your enthusiastic comments! I really enjoyed it x

Many thanks to Hannah and Tony, a highly enjoyable discussion as always. A pity that quite a few people had transport problem. As Ursula found, you can always rely on a train driver - I can recommend Chiltern Railways if you want to be sure of getting to Book Club on time.

@ Sandra Peachey: sorry you experienced difficulties last night. The reason that the event description doesn't give address details separately is that if you click on the text: 'The Victoria' on the book club page you're automatically redirected to a google map showing the exact location of the pub along with the full address and postcode. From that you would then be able to do a map search for nearby car parks. Alternatively on street parking is available but you'd need to check for local parking restrictions which seem to vary from street to street!

Alternatively, members requiring any additional information about the group and our meetings are always more than welcome to contact the organisers prior to an event, and we'll do our best to help.

Let me know if you require any further information/assistance.

Thanks to everyone for a great event tonight, as always it was fun and there were some brilliant points made. It made me think more about the book and i reckon i'll finish it at a later date. Already managed to get hold of next months book so looking forward to getting in to that sounds quite interesting.

Sorry everyone, not going to make it tonight after all. Can't believe it after wading through 600 bloody pages!! In brief: 1/2 the book might have been twice as good!

  • Kevin P.

Sorry to be missing out tonight. Have a blast!

    March 11, 2014

Hello, would anyone be willing to meet me at new street on tuesday evening and help me get back there after the event. I have moved house so will be coming in to new street from stetchford station now. If somebody does not mind doing this i'll look up the trains and find out what time train will be best to get me here for half seven.

    March 7, 2014

    • Tony C

Hi Ian, yes I can escort you to and from the station, let me know what time your train gets in - do you still have my mobile number ?

      March 8, 2014

    • Ian M.

Hi tony, that is fantastic. I still have your mobile number, I will text you when I know what train I am getting.

Hope all becomes clear to me soon...I'm struggling to understand this book. Any tips?

I turned to 367 and after rolling above a 7 it turns out I like the above comment.

      2 · March 7, 2014

    • Christopher W.

That's because you were cheating and rolling something with more sides than a d6!

It’s so far like Downton Abbey meets South Park. I keep fighting an urge to shout “Oh My God, you Killed Ursula! You bastards”; every time she pops her clogs. Or is that just me?

What? The buzzing? Yes, all the time the buzzing... so-called... in the ears... though of course not actually in the ears... in the skull... dull roar in the skull...
