October Meetup: Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

For October, we will be reading Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

Description: The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Reves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

Reminder: Time Tested is happy to order a book for you if they don't have it on the shelves - and it's easy! Just call or stop by... they put in orders on Tuesdays and it is often available that Thursday. Be sure to let them know you are with the Sacramento Women's Book Club.

The $5 fee goes to Time Tested Books for letting us use their great space.

Please bring a dish to share with the group (whatever you like!). Thanks!

It's difficult to suspend belief. I look at the Victorian times that were supposed to be part of the story, and I wonder about people then, how they went to the circus, what they expected. I feel a little jaded, it's hard to believe in magic. It was an excellent novel. I won't give up on it.

Greetings from Maryland. I read the book and really enjoyed it-- and yes, I suspended belief. Unfortunately my flight arrives too late to attend on Wednesday. But I will be there in November.

Hi! Just "officially" joined! I marked as attending, but I have never read the book. I won't have time to do so prior to the meeting. Bummer! I feel better about leaving the one remaining spot to someone who has read the book, but is just late accepting.

I haven't picked a book for November yet. We don't typically have books chosen that far out, but other members are leading discussions for October and December.

For Oct. should I just read the noted selection and R.S.V.P. on the 19th? Or can I do so sooner? I'd happily accept any other feedback or suggestions,as well!
