those of you who are members of other groups on Meetup, may have been noticing emails from organisers about no shows and late changes of RSVPs, this is my email about the same thing. While I totally appreciate that sometimes things come up last minute that we can't do anything about, I have also noticed a trend where people regularly say they're going to come along to a meetup, and then either don't show up or change their RSVP only a few days prior without a good reason. This is a particular problem for the Book Group as, as we all know, reading a book takes a while, and if someone on the waiting list gets a spot only a couple of days before the group meets, then it's highly unlikely they'll have had a chance to read the book and therefore can't contribute as they might wish to.
I would love to be able to have an unlimited number of people at the Book Group's events, but I can't for two reasons - the room we use doesn't hold that many, and I strongly believe a Book Group would not work well with loads of people at a single event. Due to this need to limit the numbers, I'm asking everyone once again to please think before they RSVP for an event. I appreciate that places go quickly and so there's a strong temptation to "book" a space even if you're not sure you're going to be able to come, but I would ask everyone to think before RSVPing and to only RSVP as yes if you're confident you will actually attend. I'm also going to start monitoring not only no shows, but also last minute changes to RSVP for repeat offenders.
Apologies for sending this email, I don't like laying down the law but the last couple of months have seen very small numbers of attendees despite the meetups being full up and having lengthy waiting lists. As I say, I do understand that things come up, or people get unwell, so I'm definitely going to be flexible over this and will allow a number of chances, but I don't think it's fair to members who genuinely want to come along to events to lose out to people who don't, and so I will be removing regular no shows / late RSVP changers without good reasons from the group.
