Book Group and the Future! Plus Aye Write Book Festival

You?ll all have seen the email that went out yesterday from the Meetup website saying that the group needed a new organiser, and those who?ve been on the website since last night will know that I?ve taken on that job. I?ve been coming to Book Group for about 18 months now, and hope I have a good understanding of how the group runs and what people want from it. Having said that, if you think there?s anything we can improve on, or any additional events, etc. that you?d like to see then let me know.
One idea I?d had was to arrange additional meetings, perhaps once every three months, where the book or books we discuss are from a particular genre or on a particular theme. This would allow us to read and discuss books that are only occasionally chosen at the regular meetings, e.g. science fiction / fantasy, biography, poetry, etc., and would hopefully not be too much of an extra burden for those who also want to keep reading for the regular monthly meeting. This is still just a vague plan in my head, however, and I?d welcome ideas on how it could be organised, what genres / themes you?d like to read, or even if you think it?s completely unnecessary!
As discussed at previous meetings, the organiser of a group pays a subscription to Meetup to cover the costs of the website. I?ve chosen to pay this on a 6-monthly basis as this keeps the costs down, and I think it can be pretty much recouped from a 50p contribution from people turning up each month. Having said that, I don?t plan to be draconian about collecting it, so if you forget one month, or can?t afford it then that won?t be a problem. Should I collect more than necessary to cover the costs of running the group, then I?ll put that money back into the group, and we can discuss how members would best like that done when it happens.
The last thing I wanted to mention was that Glasgow?s Aye Write Festival is on at the moment. For those of you who don?t know, this is a yearly book festival which attracts some great authors / speakers from a variety of genres. Unfortunately it?s already started, but there?s still plenty of speakers to come as its runs until March 13 (next Sunday). The events are ticketed, but full price tickets are only ?7 while some events are completely free, and there are still some amazing authors coming up over the next week. It?s a bit late to organise a trip to a particular event, but if you want to check it out for yourself, the website is at www.ayewrite.com.
Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know what was happening, and my thoughts as to how the group could move forward.
I look forward to hearing your feedback, and seeing you next month on April 6th when we discuss ?Human Traces? and ?Such a Long Journey?.
