June Meetup

I think we're due for some contemporary fiction.  What should we read?  The following books were suggested at the April Meetup:

  • The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein.
  • Why We Broke Up, by Daniel Handler
  • Star Tide Rising, by David Brin
  • The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold

Please vote on one of these selections! Here's how: If you have already RSVP'd, just list your vote in the comments section located at the bottom of this page. If you haven't RSVP'd, list your vote when you do so. I will tally the votes on April 15th and determine the winner. This will ensure everyone has time to get the book and read it.

Thanks!

Well, only 7 out of 14 people who RSVP'd yes actually voted...and we had a tied between The Lovely Bones and The Art of Racing in the Rain. So, since I have to be the tie-breaker, I am making our selection:

The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein.

Happy reading!

Thanks to all for coming! Sorry I had to leave early, but I'm glad I was able to make it for most of the discussion. Looking forward to next month!

really interesting to hear everyone's view of the book and seeing everyone face to face. was my first time going :D

It was certainly interesting to hear the variant opinions of the book and the aspects upon which people chose to comment. It was my first one of these, and I may do another. I'm not sure why there was an apparent apprehension to next month being poetry.

Finished the book :) Think it will make for some interesting discussion. I may try to come for a short time with my 3-year-old (there's a train table in the back where he can play). I doubt he will allow me to focus long enough on the group to join discussion, but I can at least visit with folks in the beginning. We'll see!

Dover has some cheap Poetry collections - about a $1. I looked at 3 and liked this the best. "Songs for the Open Road: Poems of Travel and Adventure" Given the interests of the group in hiking and such, might not be bad choice, but Way out of my comfort zone. Also ordered Keillers "GOOD POEMS" on CD. Can't find Open road to bring and GPoems hasn't arrived. Dave

Hello! This will be both my first Meetup and first book club. I am interested in being disciplined in making time for reading for pleasure and socializing.

The title is different. The young adult version is simply titled, "Racing in the Rain". Everyone, be carerful to get the adult version!
