July Meetup

Let's read some poetry! I know it's out of our collective comfort zone, but part of the purpose of belonging to this book club is to get exposure to just such reading!

Our selection is a compilation book; Best-Loved Poems of the American People, by Hazel Felleman.  Lucas Co. Library appears to have at least 19 copies.

Please don't feel like you have to read the entire book! It is 670 pages long. Just pick a handful of poems and read them, and come prepared to share those you liked with the group.

Also, if you really enjoy poetry and have a favorite poem/poet, feel free to bring a few selections that are not in this book to share.

Enjoy the warm weather, everyone!

I enjoyed the selections as well, both those in and out of the chosen book. The one from Charles Bukowski got under my skin and caused me to do some internet surfing later, and the original Meetup member piece was a special treat.

Looking forward to seeing everyone! Can't wait to share some poems with you, and hear what you have to share!

I may be a little late because I have an appointment, but I will try to make it.

First time attending, looking forward to it. Is iambic pentameter allowed :-)

I'd love to be there but I'll be out of town. I'll read some Elizabeth Bishop poems (my favorites are "One Art" and "The Fish") in solidarity with you.

I will be sharing a selection of poems by a Indiana poet named Scott Sprunger, who was kind enough to send me a copy of his book. The book is titled Searching for Home: Indiana Poems.

Agree, poetry is out of my comfort zone. However, I don't think I'll be able to make it. We're going to Hocking Hills. If we do poetry again and I can't make it, then you'll know I'm avoiding it...;-)

I am looking on Amazon's top selling poetry books, and Khalil Gibran's "THE PROPHET" is on the list several times. Beautiful book, and not long. I'd be happy to read it again, if anyone's interested!

There are so many great classical poetry books, we honestly could select at random anything by Frost, Keats, Poe, Dickinson, etc, and have a wonderful time reading and discussing!

I like the idea of poetry a lot. The few times I've tried to read poetry have not been successful, but always been interested in giving it a shot.
I say this meekly: "I know I can finish an audible reading of poetry so it would be great to have it read aloud, but Best Loved Poems isn't. However, Good Poems by Garrison Keillor is available in books on tape
And Best Loved Poems is 670 pages long, which daunts me."

Oh wow, did not realize Best Loved Poems was that long! Maybe we could read excerpts? We should also consider Good Poems, too!
