After a chance encounter on a train the English teacher William Bradshaw starts a close friendship with the mildly sinister Arthur Norris. Norris is a man of contradictions; lavish but heavily in debt, excessively polite but sexually deviant. First published in 1933 Mr Norris Changes Trains piquantly evokes the atmosphere of Berlin during the rise of the Nazis.

Good to see all those who braved the cold on Thursday. The regulars welcomed some first-time members and some who haven't been for a month or two (or more Chris!). Sorry to hear of illness (Liam) & car breakdown (Fiona) - hope all improve and that we'll see you soon. Enjoyed the book and the discussion it provoked on the evening so many thanks to all for that. See you in December for Alice Munro's "View from Castle Rock". Sue

Thanks to all who made it to the October meeting - we had a good mix of new members plus a couple of returners in addition to loyal regulars. The book seems to have been universally liked - I enjoyed reading it & hearing what everyone else had to say - so, good choice Liam. Hope to see you all in November for Mr Norris Changes Trains. Sue

Also you may be interested to know that Catherine Campbell, a PhD student at Edinburgh Uni, has an online survey about book groups, reading preferences etc and she is contacting all Edinburgh bookgroups in the hope that as many readers as possible will take part. If anyone would like to participate in the survey which should take about 15 minutes then please just go to https://www.survey.ed.ac.uk/edtransl2013/ Hope to see you all soon for our October book group - The Honey Guide by Richard Crompton.
