For June: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

From Amazon: "Novel by Pearl Buck, published in 1931. The novel, about peasant life in China in the 1920s, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1932. The Good Earth follows the life of Wang Lung, from his beginnings as an impoverished peasant to his eventual position as a prosperous landowner. He is aided immeasurably by his equally humble wife, O-Lan, with whom he shares a devotion to the land, to duty, and to survival. Buck combines descriptions of marriage, parenthood, and complex human emotions with depictions of Chinese reverence for the land and for a specific way of life."

Hope to see you there!

I'm almost sorry I missed the discussion! It sounds like it was a real hootananny.

Well, (lol) it was a lively discussion as usual. It is always interesting to see how each individual reacts to the same book...lots of food for thought.

Gotta thank Sandra again for suggesting this book. Somehow I'd missed Pearl Buck up til now. Without bookclub who knows if I ever would've discovered her? The Good Earth and the group discussion of it were infinitely more mind-blowing than infinity times infinity!

Good discussion on a well written and easily understood book that brought out some age old and universal themes.

I promise I will try not to start a sentence with Well. And if I do, I will own up to causing Sandra to scream.

    ugh...
    ok ok y'all...
Thank You for suffering through The Good Earth for me....
I have learned a valuable lesson... There is a reason The Good Earth is on the recommended reading list for ninth graders... sigh I just have to confess: 1) if ANYONE EVER AGAIN starts their sentences with the word "Well,..." I will SCREAM!
    2) the cadence of this book 'trudge'.
    3) I am now suffering from hypo-poly-syllable syndrome
This deficiency is caused by mono-syllable-itis which inflames the brain's Broca's area and makes the eye developed cataracts in
'self defense'... there is usually drooling involved which is invariably accompanied with yawning and head bobbing...
    4) yes, tis all my chagrin

Finished the book today. It was better than I thought it would be. I enjoyed it. An interesting look at pre-revolution China from an American's point of view.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
