July Book Meeting

  • Jul 29, 2014 · 7:00 PM

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou

From Wikipedia: "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the 1969 autobiography about the early years of African-American writer and poet Maya Angelou. The first in a seven-volume series, it is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma. The book begins when three-year-old Maya and her older brother are sent to Stamps, Arkansas, to live with their grandmother and ends when Maya becomes a mother at the age of 16. In the course of Caged Bird, Maya transforms from a victim of racism with an inferiority complex into a self-possessed, dignified young woman capable of responding to prejudice."

I am still working on the book list for the year but I should have it done before the next meeting.

Hope to see you then!

Thank you! I'm looking forward to it. Could you tell me where in the store everyone meets? There seem to be several likely places.

I have to bow out this month. I plan on reading the book and may try to make a few comments but I'll be having surgery and won't be recovered enough to make the meeting.

Sorry gang but I will have to opt out on this one.As of now I am reading Joseph Campbell and "The Power Of Myth". Nothing against Maya Angelou ; it's just depressing to me to read about racism and poverty and oppression. It may be a transforming journey of self discovery and probably a great book but does not
    resonate with me.
