The location of this meetup will be Espresso Roma on Hopkins St in Berkeley. For this meetup we will be discussing chapter 17 "Will" of Psychology, The Briefer Course by William James. We can also share thoughts & ideas about various other books we have read in the field of cognitive science and other related disciplines (such as evolutionary psychology or neuroscience). I look forward to meeting and discussing cognitive science with you!

The series of meets on William James has been an eye-opener for me, in several ways. James is really where modern psychology began, and despite some wrong turns since then, and seems to me where we should get back to, at least when we are looking at the impact of scientific study on our understanding of "mind." It has elevated the value of the classics in general for me. And it has convinced me that it is worthwhile to really study a classic, to digest every paragraph of it, versus picking out only the bits that stand out at first glance.

Do you have any suggestions on where to find a hard copy of the full text? Or is it readily available at most book stores?

Is there any reading that should be done in advance for the meetup?

Yes - we'll be discussing the last chapter of William James' Psychology The Briefer Course. Here's a link to a very similar chapter in his longer psychology book: http://psychclassics....

Ach - it's the chapter on Will - technically the second to the last chapter...
