I don't usually do the recap so quickly, but we made a switch in books. The July and August books are switching months (the calendar on the site reflects the change). So if you bought the July book, never fear, we will read it for Aug. And if you like to get a jump on the next selection, wanted to give you as much time as possible. The July book was a long time request from member who potentially can't be there in July, so we thought it not a big deal to switch.
I thought it a great meeting. The book definitely got mixed reviews, author made many leaps in assumptions, made sweeping (arrogant?) statements, and did not always get facts correct. And sometimes did not fully explain. But, having said that, it was a very thought provoking book (fairly horrifying - one word: plastics). It was not what people expected, it was more than just a book about the reverted biology of the earth if we were gone, it was also a book on the environmental state of the planet. Author added historical references about how we got to our present state, as he saw it. We had great discussions on our state as human beings on this earth and how much damage we have done. And whether we could recover. The author packed in too much, but the history was interesting. General consensus is that we think we learned allot.
Again welcome to our new members, they both added much to the discussion, along with "the regulars" who always make the group interesting. Those who couldn't make it, there is always next month. Melanie, now you know where we are!!
Have a wonderful June, and happy reading.
