BookCrossing is the act of releasing books you no longer want, either in the wild or to a friend or another book lover. BookCrossing.com is the website that makes it possible to track where these books go, and BookCrossers are an international collection of book lovers. Here (http://www.bookcrossi...) is more information about BookCrossing in general.
The York BookCrossing Meetup Group - http://bookcrossing.m... - is a group of people who enjoy reading - and who meet to talk about and swap books with other like-minded folk over a drink or two. We've been going since September 2004 but the group changes all the time and new faces are always being added to the mix. We are pretty mixed in terms of age and background and are always happy to see someone new.
Don't worry if you've never heard of BookCrossing before and can't bear to part with any of your books. We'd love for you to come along anyway - the more the merrier.
The books we swap are registered on http://www.bookcrossi... before the swap and when we've finished reading those we have picked up, we then pass them on to someone else who might like to read them. Because the books have been registered at www.bookcrossing.com we can see where they travel to - and some of them have had strange voyages!
The books on offer on any given night are as varied as the readers and there is sure to be something to tempt your fancy! All we ask is that you bring a couple of books with you - if you can - in return for the ones you take away.
We are currently using Brigantes Bar & Brasserie on Micklegate for our venue. There's little formality, just show up with some registered books and look for the group of friendly bickerers. The bar serves food until 9pm.
If you find yourself craving new books to read between MeetUps, you can also see where books are being left in the York area by signing up to release alerts on bookcrossing.com at - http://www.bookcrossi... - this means every time a book is left on a park bench or in the cinema you can go hunting for it!
