The York BookCrossing May 2013 (SPRING-THEMED) Meetup

As many FREE BookCrossing books as you can carry away... plus much book & BookCrossing-related banter, socialising, eating, drinking - and generally good times - all for a token 50p 'attendance' fee... !

What more could you ask for on the fourth Tuesday of every month?

TO FIT IN WITH THE SEASON, THIS MONTH'S BOOKCROSSING MEETUP WILL BE 'SPRING'-THEMED... SO ANY APPROPRIATELY (OR EVEN SPURIOUSLY) 'SPRING'-THEMED BOOKS WILL BE ENCOURAGED AND WELCOMED... (BUT NOT OBLIGATORY) !

I enjoyed to come to my first meeting. Spent some time on bookcrossing website today and think I now know how the basics work. Sorry I didn't release or get a number for any of the books I brought last night. I will next time. Will probably be late again next time as am working late, hope to be there 8 ish.
Adds a new dimension to browsing in charity shops having a theme. There was a 'Summer Sizzlers' title that caught my eye today-3 novellas in one pink and pastel book cover with rows of hearts at the end of chapters. Decided I am not yet that desperate to find something that fits the theme.

It's OK Ken, I don't think you'll be shot for not bringing any books your first time! Nice to meet you and go on, I dare you to try the pink and pastel covered books ;)

Thinking about the Spring theme, what's everyone's favourite springish book. To get the ball rolling, mine is the science fiction classic: Helliconia Spring by the venerable Brian W. Aldiss.

    May 9, 2013

    • Robert D.

No, didn't think anyone could think of one. Makes me feel better about ignoring the theme altogether and just bringing any old tosh along. lol

      May 13, 2013

    • The-Green-Man

erm, the only one that I can think of is the one that I've just read (in time for the meetup!); 'In The Springtime Of The Year' by Susan Hill (the woman who wrote 'The Woman In Black'). It was really excellent - and I will be BookCrossing it tomorrow evening...!

      May 27, 2013

  • Robert D.

    Bring lots of Sci-fi books!

    May 1, 2013

    • Robert D.

So, as the date approaches, I guess I should ask how this thing goes.
I was imagining that each would be a member of Bookcrossing.com and would register, on the website, each book they were bringing and put a sticker inside each one. Or am I thinking about this wrong?

      May 9, 2013

    • The-Green-Man

that would be a great thing - but if anything is a bit confusing at any stage, don't worry... we're very forgiving of first-timers !

I'm new too! This will be my first meet after moving to York this month. I don't bite but can yap on and on! I'll try to restrain myself and look forward to meeting you all soon :)

    1 · May 2, 2013

    • Robert D.

I suppose its no good asking what people like to gauge what books they will bring along because those are the ones they are more likely to keep. ;)
Better to ask what they have recently read but didn't much care for. :)

      May 9, 2013

    • The-Green-Man

Michael Marshall Smith is excellent - and no, you're right; I won't be sacrificing mine to BookCrossing I'm afraid... !

      May 27, 2013

  • LouiseB

I've got some books together but none of them fits the Spring theme. Sorry. That's the way the charity-shop-bookshelf-cookie crumbles.

    May 23, 2013

Looking forward to meeting new friends & gassing about anything, & probably some books! Might not be spring themed but will bring something along.

    Forward to meeting new people

Gah! If anyone here is on Goodreads, then you can find me there too. Interesting site: www.goodreads.com and my name is Robert Day (the one in York with the red paper crown on my head)

Hello Robert, I would be very interesting in borrowing Deja Dead. I have 4 other Kathy Reichs books but probably won't have been able to read them by the next meeting.
I have also picked up The Pirate's Daughter, which is by the same author as another book I have recently borrowed from Crossers. I like silly Pirate and Highwayman stories! Brain fluff.

Basically, the group works as follows: turn up - possible with books you are willing to let go of - have a look at the myriad of titles available, take home what you want to read, read them, bring them back to the group or pass along. We occasionally discuss literature but mostly it's a social occasion...with books. I started as a group member in last June and look forward to it every month.

    • Robert D.

Thanks Seren. I realise now why you might like the Kathy Reichs; it's all about the bones!

Sorry , new to the site. Busy on 28th June. Hope to get to a meet in the future.

      Hi Ken,
Lucky that the next meet is 28 May then! ;)
What kinda stuff are you into? :)

      May 9, 2013

  • sherdnerdess

I hope I can bring some books back or donate the new Kathy Reichs titles I picked up. Not very Spring-themed, but hey!

    April 25, 2013

    • Robert D.

      Hi Seren,
Looking forward to meeting you. I think I'll try and read my first Kathy Reichs book before we meet (Deja Dead) to get an idea of whether I like or not.

Oh dear I am pressing all the wrong buttons here! Joyce, Woolf, modernism, WG Sebald. You?

    May 1, 2013

    • Robert D.

Morning Debra, not aware of any wrong buttons, but I'm unto Sci-fi, psychology, uplifting literature, consciousness, some thrillers and classics. Looking forward to meeting.
