Morning Hikes in Barton Creek Greenbelt

Welcome to Morning Hikes in Barton Creek Greenbelt for 2014. We meet in Travis Country (South Austin) at my condo. Hike days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Start time is promptly at 8:30 am.

I hike or ride my mountain bike almost everyday, rain or shine, day and nite, on the same trails we will explore. Many of these trails are steep, rooty and rocky (“technical”). After a rain there may be standing water and mud. The rocks and roots will be slippery. Many of the trails are within the canopy and temperatures are somewhat cooler. Attendance is your acknowledgment of the potential risks.

Hikes last approximately 2 hours, in which time we may cover 5+ miles, depending on the group and trail conditions. If you lack hiking experience or have balance or health issues this group is not for you.

My goals are to have FUN and stay HEALTHY. It is not to set distance or climbing records. Health pros recommend at least one hour per day of a semi-vigorous exercise for long-term health and hiking is one of the best ways to meet that goal.

Proper preparation is essential. Eat breakfast - your body is an engine that needs fuel to perform. You must bring water (enough for your dog too), and consider a snack, hat, walking stick, sunscreen, bug spray and light-weight clothing that “wicks.” I wear water-proof hiking boots with light-weight wool socks for foot protection and stability. The joy of having a rewarding hiking experience comes from being well prepared and having the right equipment.

My dogs Boomer and Todd hike with me. They do not mountain bike. If you have a dog that can be off-leash by all means bring it. Leashed dogs are hazardous to you on technical trails and not permitted.

The boys and I hope Its Boomertime folks will continue to join us on our health quest of Austin’s great Barton Creek Greenbelt.

PS – Afterwards cold drinks and healthy snacks are available at my house. I have plenty of dry towels, if needed.

my first "official" hike of 2014 was really swell, especially being accompanied by such a happy group of seasoned partners. kudos to our newbie, linda. thanks to john for "double quiche monday" and to cutie for bringing those jennys! bm, we are out of almond bars, how could that be?

for 2014, i am making some changes in the hike schedule involving recovery days, easy days and longer days which i will be posting in a new write-up shortly. it's time to shake up the status quo. we started at 29 degrees and ended in the mid 40's. today was one of the cool days. remember how hot it was a little while ago? we actually covered 7 miles as i started endomondo a little late. check it out here:

a nice leisurely longish hike today and enough sunny warmth to help me remember this is Austin in winter not Oklahoma! great quiche John and thanks to "I'm hungry" Jenny for bringing the cuties even though we already have several :)

Great hike: not hard, but a little too long for this healing body. Going to miss these hikes -- 2 weeks! Hopefully I'll be in better shape when I get back from skiing.
