Bossa Nova came about from a marriage between Samba rhythms, West Coast Jazz musical approach, poetry and the mid-50's vibe of Brasil, especially in Rio de Janeiro. The musical form gained steam following the partnership between Tom Jobim (composer) and Vinicius de Moraes (poet) (which gave birth to many timeless classic songs like Girl from Ipanema and the classic film Black Orpheus) and Joao Gilberto's revolutionary guitar work, among many other factors. The music found its way to the jazz circles in the U.S. (thanks to Charlie Byrd & Stan Getz, and Astrud Gilberto's singing in English) and has become a mainstay in every jazz musician's repertoire.

The purpose of this group is to bring together fans of this genre. This group is organized by Barraca da Bossa, a Bossa Nova acoustic duo, who plays a variety of songs from Bossa Nova's past and present in Long Beach and L.A. on a regular basis. You should join if you
a) love jazz, Brazilian or "world" music,
b) ever listened to a song with your eyes closed,
c) appreciate quiet yet rhythmic music,
d) like classical guitar / upright bass,
e) enjoy the Portuguese language, or
f) all of the above
