Pompeii (7:30pm 3D Show)

I went to see the Pompeii exhibit at the Museum of Science and was very impressed with the artifacts I saw there.  I wondered what it must have been like to live there back then.  Here is my chance to find out.  I hope they incorporate showing some of the day to day life, so I can see some of those artifacts in action.  In any case, should be a cool flick!

The show time is 7:30.  I will be at the theater by 6:30 and we will go in for seats at 7.  The movie is showing upstairs, so we will gather at the tables, near the windows, at the top of the escalator.

Heading in for seats about 30 minutes before the show makes it easier for us to sit together. This also allows us to take turns getting snacks, etc., before the previews start.

Tickets are available on Fandango now.  I have been seeing lots of ads for this and I expect it will be a sold out show.

If you miss the group ahead of time, come find us after. We gather in the hallway outside of the theater we just saw the movie in, to discuss the film a bit, allow for restroom breaks and to get a head count of all those who would like to go out after for drinks and munchies.

$$$$Managing the after event is much easier if everyone brings cash, so please plan ahead if you want to go out with the group after. We will be splitting one check for the group.$$$

Movie was cheesy but engaging. Reminiscent of "Titanic," but minus a "My Heart Will Go On"-esque ballad (which is kinda surprising). Anyway, the After Event at Rock Bottom was where the fun was *really* at. Great catching up with old friends and making new ones. Had a fabulous time. Thanks to Doreen for organizing!

I can't tell if that's meant to be a compliment or merely an observation, Paul. There are worse things to be called. I think I'm sunny . . . but sunny with an EDGE!

Laura: You may have an edgy side, but, so far, all I've ever seen you being is nice, normal and friendly. Sorry to disappoint you. ;-) P.S. Don't feel compelled to disabuse me of whatever mistaken ideas I may have of you.

Above, you say the movie will be playing "upstairs," but I've never seen any actual stairs there, just escalators. I'm confused. :-p

Just look for the escalator that's moving downward, and you walk up that one. And on your way down, find the escalator steps that are moving upward. It's great exercise.

For those interested, there's a documentary available on Netflix called Pompeii: Back from the Dead, which features scientists who found the skeletons of 54 men, women and children who had taken refuge in a cellar. Unlike the remains from under the ashes, which were destroyed in prior excavations, these were intact enough to perform extensive analysis, and the scientists learned a great deal about how people lived and finally died in Pompeii. And sorry I missed the fun with everybody :(

Many thanks for alerting us to this documentary, John. As for the movie, you really didn't miss much: some impressive visuals, and some nice moments here and there-Adewale Akinouye Agbaje was somewhat impressive-but, on the whole, a lot of boiler-plate "swords 'n' sandals" stuff. However, we did miss you afterward @ the Rockbottom. Hope you are recovering from your recent physical ills.

Movie was very predictable but visually awesome. Lots of eye candy and volcanic activity. As usual, the 3d did not add that much to the movie...they should have filmed it in IMAX instead. The group was a lot of fun and the after event was a blast! Thanks for coming everyone. :)

Just got my ticket. From the looks of things, this sounds like its done in the same vein as "Titanic" and "Pearl Harbor." We'll see how this one turns out.

Yeah, I saw that movie, Paul, and it was definitely a downer. But Hollywood blockbusters that recreate historic natural disasters that caused catastrophic loss of life such as the one we're seeing tonight? Now you're talking! ;)

      February 22, 2014

    • Paul K.

Yeah. Good, wholesome, catastrophic family entertainment. ;-)

    I like watching movies....

Why is it that so many of these "swords-and-sandals" epics, when made for English-speaking audiences, feature specifically British casts? Such a choice makes perfect sense when doing Shakespeare, but why can't an American portray an ancient Roman gladiator? Hmm?

I won't be able to make it to the cinema 'til around 6:30pm., if that's okay.

I have a pass for the Boston Herald screening on Feb 19th 7:00pm at AMC Loews Boston Common 19. However, I only see a meetup for the 22nd. Being relatively new around here, I'm curious as to why I'm not seeing one for the 19th?

    February 13, 2014

    • Doreen C.

Because I would rather pay for a seat and know I have one than show up with hundreds of other people who printed out a pass. I want to go with the group and the last time I tried to attend an event like this with a free pass only 3 people actually made it into the movie.

Showtime will be 7:30. We are seeing the 3D version. It is showing upstairs so we meet at the tables by the windows, at the top of the escalator at 6:30. We head in for seats at 7. $$$$$Remember to bring cash if you want to go out for food and drink after. We will be splitting one check!$$$$$$
