Futures and Promises in Scala 2.10

Philipp Haller (Typesafe, EPFL, author of Actors in Scala book) will present:

Scala Improvement Proposal 14 (SIP-14) adds new APIs for futures and promises to Scala's standard library. In this talk I will give an overview of the design and usage of these abstractions, as well as a glimpse into their efficient, non-blocking implementation. I will also talk about the new Try and ExecutionContext types which form an integral part of the new futures API, in addition to being independently useful.

hangout/drinks after at Meadhall, corner of Broadway and Ames, near the Kendall T stop.

Note this is in a different room than usual. It's easy to get lost in the Stata Center, so allow some extra time. Enter the building at 32 Vassar Street, opposite the sign for 43 Vassar Street. Take the elevator (under a sign saying "Alexander W Dreyfoos Building" to the fourth floor. (If you find yourself instead in the Gates Building part of the Stata Center, you will need to walk to the other end of the buildling to the Dreyfoos elevators.) Turn left out of the elevator, then immediately turn right, go through the double doors, walk almost all the way across the orange carpeted area, and look for room 32-G449 on your right.

I'm sorry about the locked doors. We requested unlocked doors and we were told we'd have them, but somehow it didn't actually happen.

Usually there are enough people coming and going that if you wait a few minutes, you can enter or leave with someone else. I'll add a note about it to the next meetup.

Tried most of the building's doors - they're all locked

We know it's unusual and a little odd to have two meetings the same week, but that's just how the scheduling worked out.

If you can't make Philipp's talk on Tuesday, Chris Baxter's lightning talk on the same topic on Thursday will be a bite-size introduction to the same topic. (And it should be short enough not to bore people who come both nights.)
