May Book Club Meeting

Good News Everyone!

It's graphic novel month and from the results of the poll, you want to read Transmetropolitan, Volumes 1 and 2 by Warren Ellis (Author) and Darick Robertson (Illustrator)!

From Amazon, Volume 1:

In this first volume, Spider ventures into the dangerous Angels 8 district, home of the Transients — humans who have decided to become aliens through cosmetic surgery. But Spider's interview with the Transients' leader gets him a scoop he didn't bargain for. And don't miss Spider's first confrontation with the President of the United States . . . in a men's room.

From Amazon, Volume 2:

In this volume, Jerusalem targets three of society's most worshiped and warped pillars: politics, religion, and television. When Spider tries to shed light on the atrocities of these institutions, he finds himself fleeing a group of hit men/kidnappers in possession of his ex-wife's frozen head, a distorted creature alleging to be his son, and a vicious talking police dog.

We will be meeting at Comicazi on Highland Ave in Davis Square. There is metered parking all along Highland as well as a public lot on Day Street near Redbones and across the street from Orleans restaurant. There is also T access and bus connections.

See you there!

-Josh

Really enjoyed the discussion - not such a big fan of the book, but really glad you chose it - I've been meaning to read it for so long!

Is anyone interested in joining me for dinner and drinks beforehand? I liked The Joshua Tree, they had brandy beer last time. They're at 256 Elm St, about a 2 minute walk from Comicazi. I'm shooting for 6:15 or so.

I'm super unhappy about this, but I'm out of town for the day tomorrow and I don't think I can realistically make it back in time for this. Here are my truncated comments on Transmetrolitan: ONE OF THE GREATEST COMIC SERIES EVARRRR!!!!1!!!!!!

Sooo...if I just happen to show up with said graphic novels...can I pretend like I'm on the list?

Has anyone been in contact with Comicazi about the graphic novels we ordered at the end of the last book club meeting? I haven't heard from them, but I also have no idea how long it should take. Thanks!

Sweet, something to pick up on Sat :)

If you haven't picked the comics up from Comicazi yet, remember to let them know about our group discount. Otherwise they'll charge full retail.

HAs anyone else had a chance to read Darwin Elevator? My favorite (cheesiest) line: Events beyond his control clawed at his attention, like hungry kittens.

    :D

I haven't read it, but now I want to :D

I enjoyed the story and its telling, and am curious to read the sequel

So the consensus seems to be overwhelmingly for reading multiple books. Why don't we read the first two Transmetropolitians (Back on the Street and Lust for Life)? I will contact Comicazi and tell them we are reading those and what they can do with ordering us copies for cheap. Reply to this if you are interested so I know how many I should tell him to order.

So, related to the questions I asked during RSVP: Do you guys want to do two graphic novels and compare them? I haven't done that before just because GN can be expensive compared to a book. But if people think we could do it, I am totally up for it! If you wanted to do two and compare - Doktor Sleepless, Saga, and The Invisibles are some choices I think might pair nicely with Transmet.

    Thoughts?

Trans #1 is actually really short. I'm a little surprised we aren't doing #1 and #2. (But not complaining! I'm super excited to be doing Transmetropolitan!)

I don't personally have an issue with multiple title comparisions. And didn't the owner of Comicazzi say something about discounts for club members? I think that is something to take advantage of post-haste!
