August Book Club

Not good News Everyone :-/

The great Iain Banks passed away recently and in honor of his death, we will be reading the first book in his great Culture series, Consider Phlebas.

From Amazon:

The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender.

Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. It was the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, actually to find it, and with it their own destruction.

We will be meeting at Comicazi on Highland Ave in Davis Square. There is metered parking all along Highland as well as a public lot on Day Street near Redbones and across the street from Orleans restaurant. There is also T access and bus connections.

See you there!

-Josh

Last night we discussed suggestions for books to read in the future. Is there someplace we can submit book suggestions? Or is it best to just leave them in the comments here?

Thanks! I posted a list of suggestions there.

I went ahead and sent Josh an email with recommendations last night, but I was, like half asleep. :D

I really enjoyed last night's group. In retrospect I realize that Consider Phlebas is the first Culture novels but isn't the best of the Culture novels. If you want to read more Culture novels I recommend The Use of Weapons and Look to Windward. If you want to read Iain Banks' literary fiction I recommend starting with the Wasp Factory.

We are setting up a dinner before the book club for those that are interested. If you want to grab some food and drinks beforehand, stop by Redbones at around 6pm. I will try and update this post to where we are when we get seated.

Hey guys, I recently joined this group and I've been invited to attend the book club meet for August. Can't make it this month though but I will show up next month.

as the book club meetup continues to fill up with a waiting list, would anyone be interested in hosting/attending more genre specific book clubs at different places around the city so that more people can take part. For example a Cyberpunk book club in Cambridge, an Urban Fantasy group in Downtown, A fantasy group in brookline. As these groups are genre specific the attendance would be lower and could theoretically be held in smaller venues like restaurants. If you want to host, you can add the idea on the suggest a meetup tab on the main page. Hopefully, we can reach more people this way.

Desti, if you want to start something, you would have all of our support. We can help with location ideas, filling seats at the first meeting, stuff like that. What would your group focus on.

I'd love to but I'm still back and forth from London every 6 weeks so not really available to arrange stuff.

Just got the eBook for August. Never having read any Iain Banks/Iain M. Banks, I'm hoping this will be a good book.
