March Book Club

Good News Everyone!

This month I am flexing my dictatorial muscles and we are going to do something a little differently. No poll! We are going to read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World See the links above or below to learn more about the book.

We will be meeting at Comicazi on Highland Ave in Davis Square. There is metered parking all along Highland as well as a public lot on Day Street near Redbones and across the street from Orleans restaurant. There is also T access and bus connections.

See you there!

-Josh

Great discussion with interesting people. I'd like to see a slightly more structured discussion in the future, but it worked surprisingly well as is.

Bowing out tonight as there's a large head count and my cat died, so I'm not fit to socialize today anyway. I did the read the book though, and maybe someone will bring this up - isn't Aldous being a little silly assuming that simply because someone is mentally disabled, they will enjoy whatever crappy job they get assigned? Presumably conditioning can only take you so far...

I think the conditioning is supposed to work for everyone but some Alphas. Not clear even Betas or Alphas get much choice about their job, vs. having been groomed for life for a job.

In case anyone missed it during the Meetup this evening... Vericon (http://www.vericon.org) is an inexpensive con at Harvard next weekend. Guests include three writers we've read in this Book Club!

I did force myself to finish reading the book (more like skimmed it), but I also have pie baking for tomorrow and sleep to catch up on. I'll see you in a few months.

      making pies tonight is cheating!

Hi Guys, please check your schedules and see if you can still make this event tonight. Comicazi can only hold so many people and having 37 on the attending list this late in the day is a tad worrying...

Damien, I've found that waitlists are rather restricting as people sign up (filling a spot) and then can't come. Meanwhile, people who were intending to come think there won't be room as the meetup is full. Since the new year, I've been trying to not do waitlists to see how it goes and it has been doing pretty well, but 40 people was a bit much day of...

      I am here now.

I'm dying of the plague, so I'm going to have to miss this one. Was really looking forward to discussing the book :(

:-( Hope you can make it next time!

I was planning on coming, but I need to make pies tonight anyway so I switched rsvp to no.

Super-excited for my first book club meetup in, like, forever!

Would it be possible to have the May bookclub meetup be on the 15th?

    February 15, 2014

    • Josh

Hint: It's always on the second Thursday of the month unless that week has the first Tuesday of the month in it (so we don't have the social and the book club in the same week). Then it is the third Thursday of the month.

I'll be able to make the May meeting since it is on the 15th.
