April Book Club

Good News Everyone!

This month I am flexing my dictatorial muscles  again and we are doing another graphic novel! We are going to read Saga Volumes 1 and 2, a comic book series written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. See the links above or below to learn more about the book.

We will be meeting at Comicazi on Highland Ave in Davis Square. There is metered parking all along Highland as well as a public lot on Day Street near Redbones and across the street from Orleans restaurant. There is also T access and bus connections.

See you there!

-Josh

Get Saga on Amazon (volumes 1 and 2), B&N (volumes 1 and 2), or through the Minuteman Library system. Or you could support the shop that has been great for us for the last two years! Support the local comic shops! Learn about it on Goodreads.

    Saga. It is the best.

This was my first time going to a book club event and it was very enjoyable. I plan to attend more. There's were many intelligent conversations about the material. Saga is a great series and I'm glad everyone enjoyed it.

It's weird when it's unanimous like that!

This was fun and it was good to meet like minded individuals.

Work kept me late :( And I read them both! And I really liked them..

Anyone interested in grabbing dinner beforehand?

Try the dipping sauce ramen (can't remember the name, just read the description. Should be bottom option on the menu.)

      Running a bit late.

I have to do something, so I'm not coming anymore. Have fun. Saga! :-)

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to make it :( It's a bit too late for me (I sound like a grandpa or something!), but I'm definitely coming to the next Social Meetup! Have fun, I can't wait to eventually meet like-minded people!

Just to clarify, 7:30PM isn't late, but I live out in Westborough and probably wouldn't get home until 11 or so :P

This will be my first time attending the book club. I'm assuming there will be a designated area for the meeting correct?

    April 8, 2014

    • Josh

Yep. Comicazi sets up a circle of chairs in the back of the shop for us. Can't miss it if you keep going to the back.

      April 8, 2014

    • Ed S.

      Thanks a lot man.

      April 8, 2014

  • Joseph

Would it be possible to start the book club at 7PM instead of 7:30PM?

    April 7, 2014

    • Josh

People typically use the extra time to grab a bite to eat before the meetup (as the shop does not allow food). So I think it will be unlikely that the time will change in the future.

      No problemo! Thanks, Josh

Doesn't matter which book we choose to read, I'm just excited to meet and talk to people about anything geeky, sci-fi, or fantasy related!

You could say the same thing about Wool. It's a post-apocalyptic narrative where an oppressive, Orwellian government is being brought down by a common uprising of those in the lower stratum. Yawn /s. There is a reason the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover" exists. Both Promise of Blood and Wool are good stories, which is why I picked them for the poll; I've actually read both of them. Dissing on one, especially when you haven't actually read it, does the group a disservice. Some people may be in the mood to read a revolt against the king book. Just like others might not be in the mood to read another post-apocalyptic book.

I have to say, that comparing Wool to 1984 does Wool no service. It's not even close to 1984. I have read the Wool Omnibus and I will read "Promise of Blood" should it win. I just feel that Wool was so good that it deserves to win.

I've just finished volume two and now have volume three on reserve at the library.

I think the discussion will be interesting.

Sorry guys, but I have friends coming in for PAX East and this is the only night we could do. Don't worry, you are in good hands with Jerry, Budd, and Andrew!

    April 2, 2014

  • Jerry

While it is not going to be covered for this book club, volume 3 is coming out the 25th. So, if like myself, you enjoyed the first two volumes you might want to pick it up. I'm sure Comicazi will have plenty of copies.

    • waiching

Great. Going to pick it up today.

Just got my copy of vol. 3 from Amazon today. I wonder if the boss will notice if I disappear for an hour or so?

I liked Saga Part 1. I'm now waiting for Part 2 which is in transit at the library (Minuteman Library Network). Boston Public Library doesn't have Part 2.

    March 17, 2014

    • Christopher V.

Yes, I saw part 2 at the Somerville library main branch a few weeks ago. I ended up purchasing both trades, because... art.

I believe this is my first time commenting. I've been reading Saga since it started and I highly recommend it. The writing and artwork are exceptional and all the characters are very engaging. It has a bit of a Star Wars vibe to it. Mature science fiction done right.

I attended an Image Comics panel at Arisia this year where I heard great things about this. I just finished "I Kill Giants" and can't wait to start Saga!
