Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Come watch Star Trek's response to the success of George Lucas' "faster more intense" ethos. Paramount decided to go with "slower more ponderous". Star Trek the motion picture shares more with 2001 than later classic The Wrath of Khan. See the film that has divided Trek fans for decades with its pale two tone jumpsuits.

Man, people are hard on this movie. I guess I always just enjoyed the feel of it enough to overlook its flaws.

I can't believe I managed to stay awake for the entire movie! (OK, I did have a 5-hour energy drink before I left the house.) Great to see this movie in the big screen again. I didn't mind the slow shots of the Enterprise in dry dock, but I did get very bored of the long slow shots inside V'ger. And I lost count of the number of uniform changes Kirk went through. Heck they all did. If you liked the movie at all read Roddenberry's novelization, it fills in some back-story.

What version of TMP was shown — the original, or the Director's Cut?

I'm trying to imagine what working on the set was like: Stand still and stare at a blue screen for 10-20 minutes a take - with feeling. Then collect a half a million dollars.

Poor Sulu. After having to work so close to a Deltan without any "satisfaction" would have driven any hetero male to change course.

This time, I was distracted by how Scotty's mustache was apparently culled from a different animal than his toupee.

The script could have been written for a TV episode. (I suspect it was derived from a Thermian "historic document" of a 5th year mission). To use all 90 minutes, they fluffed it with hero worship face time (of the crew and the ship) and what was then big screen sci-fi special effects.

I went to the Andromeda Strain, but Star Trek got delayed until 9:45 PM. That's pretty late for a school night, and by 9:30 I didn't see any Meetupers in the theater or lobby, so I headed home. Sorry I missed y'all!

Sorry we missed you, Ken. Hope you enjoyed the Andromeda Strain!

When I first saw this movie (on the small screen, years ago), it barely held my interest. Something about the big screen--or, ahem, my maturity--made this re-viewing much more enjoyable.

Fun time everyone - sorry about John Harvard's. I take the blame for that one.

PRE-MOVIE DINNER/DRINKS: I'll be needing something to eat, and a beer or two. How is Charlie's Kitchen in the evening? Their page says they are doing karaoke, so that worries me.

Going to be late. Woman crashed car.

To be more clear, she had an accident in front of me, so I waited with her until the police arrived. All is well.

I don't think I'm going to make the movie, but if anyone wants to grab dinner/drinks before let me know!

I'd be down for drinks and/or dinner beforehand

Ugh, I won't be making tonight's event or the dinner beforehand. Car drama. I suppose I owe everyone a drink, lol.

Probably won't be able to make it. Say hi to Veeger for me!

I bought my tickets for this. My husband and I will be in attendance. I've watched this movie on the small screen, never on the big screen. :)

Why not make this a double feature with The Andromeda Strain? It's only $2 more.

I'm all for that! I've never seen The Andromeda Strain.

I'm in the minority of people who likes and will defend TMP. I'll put myself down for this one.

Also, consider what the Enterprise had looked like up till this scene.

Then watch 2001 and the Enterprise scene will seem concise.

I just finished reading novelization the Roddenberry "wrote". (Pretty sure Alan Dean Foster wrote it, but I'd like to imagine Gene leaning over his shoulder making edits along the way.) Mostly faithful to the movie, but some interesting insights into the background of Starfleet and the mindset of V'Ger.

I haven't seen this show in thirty years. Might be worth re-evaluating…

This movie runs over two hours, even with the standard edit. Hmmm.... I have to think about this...

    Ponderous is putting it lightly...
