Hi SciFi and Fantasy fans! Don't worry, I'm not going to spam you. I
just have a few items that I'd like to bring to your attention.
== MetroWest Meetup? ==
Recently, there has been some discussion about having another regular
social meetup in "MetroWest", for those of us who live in suburbia. If
this sounds interesting to you, please give us some feedback on this poll:
Wanna talk about it? The discussion is here:
== Arisia ==
I think it would be a lot of fun to have a big presence at Arisia 2011.
For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, Arisia is a
Boston Science Fiction/Fantasy convention. This coming year, it will be
at the Westin Waterfront Hotel, January 14-17, 2011.
The Guests of Honor are:
* Kelley Armstrong, writer guest of honor
* Shaenon Garrity, webcomic guest of honor
* Josh Simpson, artist guest of honor
* Ren? Walling, fan guest of honor
More info about Arisia can be found here: http://2011.arisi...
At a minimum, I will make fliers and have them available at the con to
help spread the word about our group. However, thinking bigger, it would
be a lot of fun to have a room party. A room party is when a group rents
a hotel room, then decorates the room in a scifi/fantasy themed way,
serving free drinks and snacks.
When I was in Chicago, that meetup group regularly threw room parties
for their local conventions, and they were a big success. They did
Doctor Who and Firefly themed parties (and they did a BSG themed party
after I had moved to Boston).
However, there is a fair amount of work and money that goes into it. The
room has to be rented, a theme has to be chosen, decorations built or
bought, alcohol, mixers, and snacks have to be purchased (I'm pretty
sure all alcohol has to be bought directly from the hotel, because of MA
state laws), then people need to actually work the party (prep,
bartenders, door, cleanup).
But it is also a great excuse to dress up in costume, meet new people,
and have fun! We can also do something like a video game event or a
movie night if we want to get the room for additional nights beyond the
party night (again, there is additional cost there).
Also, if we have the room for the duration of the con, there is the
option of having people crash there (except for the night of the party,
I need to know if people are interested in making this happen. It will
involve financial contributions as well as time and work (both before,
during, and after the party). However, the more people involved, the
less it will cost per person.
If you're willing to join the party effort, please reply to this email
and let me know. Once we get an idea of how many people are involved, we
can start figuring out an idea of cost, as well as work on deciding the
