A note on the Social Meetup

Hello Boston SciFi/Fantasy fans!

I know that a fair amount of people are not happy with the venue where we are currently holding the Monthly Social Meetup. Specifically, I've been told that the food is terrible, the service has gone downhill, the acoustics are terrible, its difficult to be social there, and it is not very handicap accessible. (But on the plus side, it does not appear to be located on top of a hellmouth...)

Rest assured, I (and the other organizers) hear you. We're going to start the process of looking for a new location, but we really could use your help here. Here are the criteria that we're looking for:

* Needs to be accessible via the T. (No, the commuter rail doesn't count.)
* Needs to be able to easily accommodate 50+ people.
* Cannot charge a "party fee" (we're really trying very hard to avoid charging people to attend this meetup)
* Handicap accessible
* Cannot be a private residence
* Minimal noise-level, but also tolerant of us talking and making announcements

Nice to haves:
* Serves food that isn't too expensive and isn't too niche (I love sushi but I know lots of SciFi fans who don't)
* Serves alcohol
* A private room is ideal
* An AV setup where we could show SciFi/Fantasy stuff in the background

There are a few places we've either been at before and outgrown, or we've already talked to them and they aren't interested or able to accommodate us:

* Christopher's (in Porter Square) [Will not accommodate us without expensive party fee]
* Tavern on the Square (in both Porter and Central) [Outgrown]
* The Friendly Toast (in Kendall Square) [Too small]
* Cambridge Common/Lizard Lounge (in Cambridge) [Barely big enough, wanted an expensive party fee]

We have a promising option for a meetup venue starting at the end of the summer which should have a ton of space, a nice AV setup, but no food (except what we have delivered in) and no alcohol. If that works out (and we can't find a good replacement social venue), we may convert to that format at the end of the summer.

If you have a venue suggestion, please feel free to email it to me, and we'll consider it! In the interim, we're going to keep scheduling the Social Meetup at Tommy O'Doyles, please bear with us!

As always, if you have comments or suggestions, feel free to send them to me or to any of our organizers!

Thanks,

Tom Callaway
