Talk 1. Understanding email spam
Spam is the single greatest challenge to email providers and users. Without the constant (and often invisible) level of anti-spam efforts by ISPs and client software, Email would be useless. How Useless? Microsoft estimates 97% of all email messages are spam.
In this talk, we'll be learning about
- History of Spam
- Stats on Botnets and Spam
- Where they come from & how much they cost
- Anti Spam techniques (e.g. DNSBLs, Bayesian filtering)
Joe Pranevich is the Director of Global IT & Infrastructure at Lycos, Inc., and its parent, Ybrant Digital. He has been a teaching fellow at Harvard Extension since 2005 and has a background in operations (e.g. datacenters, networks, servers).
Talk 2. Hacking risk analytics
- What is Risk?
- How do you measure risk?
- Difference between probability and frequency?
- How PERT distributions help
- Hacking together three different tools together to allow you to perform intelligent analytics
Walt Williams used to work down the hall from members of the L0Pht crew, did some neat things with some of them and became an accidental information security professional who has sunk down the ranks to management. The last time he did any hacking was when Windows NT 5 was in beta, but he's done a little of everything, including building three top notch information security programs for three different start-ups. He currently manages security and compliance for a big data analytics company.
