The Promises Pattern in Javascript

February's JavaScript Meetup will be presented by, Eric Strathmeyerwho will be speaking on the Promises Pattern in JavaScript.

If you're writing JavaScript in 2012, you're dealing with callbacks. The common method of supplying a callback function as a parameter works fine for small cases, but can quickly get unmanageable as the complexity of your code increases.

The Promises pattern offers programmers an escape from callback hell.

We'll begin with jQuery Deferreds, the first place most programmers are likely to encounter (a version of) the Promises pattern. We'll then discuss jQuery Callbacks, and wrap up with a quick look at the node-promise library.

After the presentation | demonstration, we will go around the room introducing ourselves and asking the group for advice | opinions on any JavaScript-related issues members are facing.

This meeting is being hosted by SignedOn, located on Floor 4 at 373 Washington St, Down-Town Crossing, MA. A one minute walk from State T station.

Pizza and refreshments will be provided as usual.

Doors open at 6:30pm, and the talk begins aprox. 6:45-7:15pm

Very well done presentation and very informative. I can definitely see the use for promises and deferreds is the code I'm developing.

Well presented - very informative. The JQuery stuff was fine, but I'm interested in techniques for developing my own patterns.

I will be posting a link to slides here after the event. The talk will be about 45 min long, with time for questions afterwards.
