Boston Atheists De-Baptism Party

It's not a debunking, it's a dedunking.

In response to the 2012 "One Day, No Religion" campaign -- as at http://february20.org -- it was been suggested that the BA sponsor a de-baptism evening. The results of the membership poll at http://www.meetup.com/bostonatheists/polls/258567/ were in favor of the event, so here we go!

Members can expect to enjoy the usual food and drink fare off the Beerworks menu. The program will consist of some introductory comments by the evening's host, before we move into taking turns saying a few words, each of us, by way of public repudiation of our former condition as baptized Christians. Then we'll have our baptism-moistened foreheads dried off by blowdryer. Bring a camera, dress to impress -- this is a solemn occasion, friends.

Wait I just got an email, so is the event at 7:45 now?

    • Zachary B.

No, the "program" portion of the evening starts then.

Well, folks, the time's come to pin down our plans for this wacky event. I'm inclined to suggest Beerworks on Canal Street, near the Garden. Any reasons why this wouldn't work?

I'm looking forward to attending, but getting into Boston on a weeknight is tough for me too.. any chance of moving it to the 'burbs? Preferably someplace with free parking?

    February 14, 2013

    • Laurel M.

I too am out in the 'burbs and would love to get together earlier in the evening at a place where parking is free and you know, available? I will keep tuning in to hopefully see what's coming in the future.

Of course, Laurel! Is there a venue you think would work well? We've met sometimes at the Bertucci's at Alewife, but there's no reason we couldn't go further afield...

Is there an age limit for participants?

    November 26, 2012

    • Zachary B.

There is an age requirement: You must be over the age of consent. (In respecting such a requirement, you'll notice that we're quite different from many religious traditions that involve their youth, even their infants, in ceremonies of conscience and devotion before, you know, they can count to five.)

Looking forward to this..is there a number to reach you at in case I do not find the group?

I won't be able to make this! I will have to work, then. Next time!

Do you have to be (a former) Catholic to attend?

    • Deb

Thanks! I can't decide of my Episcopalian grandmother would have been pleased or miffed. She was always so suspicious of Catholics.

They're up to something. Look at the pope's fancy hat. What's he hiding under there?

2nd generation athiest so nothing to "de". Maybe u cud add something. How about the ability to do computations easily! Nah. I better pray for that one. Ha. It will take a miracle!

    • Zachary B.

We can anoint you with the Chrism of Skepticism, if you like. That should empower you with all kinds of computational precocity. (Don't say anything if the chrism looks like ranch dressing -- you'll spoil the ceremony.)

I doubt I'll have the energy to wade into Boston after work, but I'll try. I was baptized Catholic as a baby, but never taken to church again. They gave me an extra strong dose I guess :o

Houghtons Pond in the Blue Hills might be a cool place to do this. They do loud Baptisms there all the time but also, it's way cool. Maybe a bit cold in February though.
