RE: [bostonatheists] A propsal

Apart from the obvious things, such as violence of religion etc, we must also be very clear that we are demonstrating against an ideology that demands special privilege when it comes to freedom of expression. A you tube video of Hitchens talking against the violence around a Danish cartoon. That could be a good one to include.

We also have to be clear that the you tube video was unnecessary, irresponsible, and insensitive not because it ridiculed some religious figure that demands special protection, but because it caused an immediate danger to a minority group (Coptic Christians in this case) in the part of the world, which is already hostile to them. Personally, I am horrified to even imagine the plight of those minorities in Egypt. We have to make it very clear that our sympathy to the Coptic Christian is not based on their religious affiliation, but based on humanitarian grounds based on their minority status in that region.

I'd be happy to put together a YouTube video for this. Does anyone have something in mind for what they'd like to see in it?

Everyone has to begin somewhere! You might begin by identifying a range of dates for such an event, and by investigating the permits required by City Hall. With a date in mind, and the knowledge that the appropriate permits can be obtained, you'll be in a position to ask for volunteers to help you plan and execute. And of course, I'll be wanting to provide whatever support I can.

Zachary,

Thanks for the reply. Personally, I have absolutely no experience in organizing a demonstration. I have never organized even a barbecue party, let alone a political demonstration. But I am willing to participate, if such demonstration is organized. But I do know a few who has some experience. I'll talk to them ASAP. In the mean time, if anybody else can do it, I'll be happy to help as much as I can. Let's do it!

Raja -- we have people (not just in our group, but the several dozen in Mass and New England), and we have good sense, and we have resources. I'm very much in favor of your idea, and I rather think something could come of it if someone were to commit to making it happen. Would you like to propose a date and location, and we can see who else would like to be part of planning it?

I for one would be willing to endorse such a demonstration (as against a protest) in my official capacity as State Director for American Atheists. I have to suppose any number of local clergy would be willing to add their voices and support to such a message as well.

Tell us more,

Z
