 Stephen Greenblatt,  from his book "The Swerve", channeling Epicurus. 

 'Christians are like a council of frogs in a pond, croaking at the top of their lungs, "For our sakes was the world created." '

 Epicurus scoffed at Christianity because it was his target of opportunity. The same sentiment, it seems to me, applies to any theistic religion.
