Re: [bostonatheists] Your irreligious daily devotional

Well said.  There's no point of fighting hate and intolerance with more hate and intolerance.  For atheists (or any other generally intolerated or distrusted group of people) alienation doesn't win any arguments.

I thought the point of meetup was to meet and discuss things face to face.  I think emails tend to keep people from having constructive conversations and being able to fully express the intent behind their words.  Also, humorous attempts may come across better. .

As a foreigner, I probably don't understand all the nuances of the English language, but yes, Eric, your comment seems a little offensive to me. "Your best bet is to leave humanity" sounds terrible. Allison's comment, instead, (whether you agree with it or not) was quite constructive in suggesting that atheists should focus on building a positive community.

Someone reminded Allison that different people are in different places in their lives, and that some still harbor feelings of resentment towards the religious. We should respect that, and respect Alison for having been able to move beyond that.

Best, Mauro.

Alison, I think you might run into that no matter what. You have some atheists here, obviously, but they’re still human. They build peer groups and exclude outsiders. If you went rock climbing, they’d be bashing non-rock climbers. If you want to escape humanity, your best bet is to literally leave humans. FYI, this is not for inflammatory purposes; simply stating an opinion. Please disregard if too offensive.

Regards,

Eric

Alright, religion-bashing has been cute the first three dozen times, but it really needs to stop. It helps no one, especially atheists.

I would like to be part of a community like the one I saw yesterday, lots of people gathering for food and friendliness. But if the undercurrent of resentment and hate is a permanent feature of organized atheism, I'll try my luck with the Boston Rock Climbers instead.

Epicurus scoffed at Christianity because it was his target of opportunity. The same sentiment, it seems to me, applies to any theistic religion.
