Senate Finance Committee Considers SCA Tax Suggestions, Bachmann Won't Run Again

Rep. Michele Bachman (R- MN)  announced Wednesday she will not seek reelection. Bachmann received an "F" in SCA's two most recent scorecards.
The Secular Coalition met with the offices of Senate Finance Committee chair Senator Max Baucus and ranking member Senator Orrin Hatch regarding our proposed tax code changes to address religious privileging. Both offices expressed interest in the Secular Coalition's proposed changes to level the playing field between religious and secular nonprofits. We are currently working on a research report to the Senate Finance Committee.

The Secular Coalition is conducting its second annual strategic planning survey. The survey is an opportunity for you to give your feedback on the job the Secular Coalition is doing, and offer any suggestions. Complete the survey here.

Rep. Michele Bachman (R- MN) -- who sits on the House Committees on Intelligence and Financial Services -- announced Wednesday she will not seek reelection. Bachmann received  "Fs" on our 2012 Presidential Primary Scorecard and our 2011 Congressional Scorecard. Bachmann has Dominionist ties (a political movement that believes Christians should rule the world), and she and her husband operated "Pray away the gay" clinics in her home state that were at least partially government funded. The Huffington Post described Bachmann's resignation as, "a stunning blow to the tea party and the evangelical right."

The American Humanist Association holds its 72 annual conference in San Diego this weekend. There is a live stream of the conference available here. The American Humanist Association called for its members to support Oklahoma tornado victim Rebecca Vitsmun in order to help her in this time of need and recognize her for her honesty and bravery during her appearance on CNN this week. A $10,000 donation was forwarded to her today through the American Humanist Association's charitable project, Humanist Charities.
