Re: [bostonatheists] Is Slate Magazine Right that Sexual Harassment is Rampant in Our Ranks?

Well stated, David.

Our primary focus should be creating a culture where men are expected to take responsibility for treating everyone respectfully. (Women too, of course.) where that is the norm and anything else is instantly and decisively responded to by everyone around.

I want to throw my two cents in for whatever it's worth. I think the important questions to be asking are not whether or not misogyny is any more or less prevalent within the community of unbelief or how failure to pick up on social ques impacts that (although I must say, Catherine, I very much enjoyed your paper). I think the broader point is to recognize that we are all part of a culture that teaches "don't get raped" rather than "don't rape." We're slightly outside of the mainstream but not isolated from those pernicious influences. Specifically as men we should be asking ourselves how do we create the inclusive culture, dissuade ourselves and others from reverting to idiotic sexist attacks/behavior and ensure that the realities of the atheist community in principle and practice live up to our highest ideals.

Just another thought about one of Bob's comments:

atheistic gatherings have less harassment, but higher report rates than most.

I thought about this and it makes a lot of sense.  Personality tendencies could play a role here with women.  Female atheists are plausibly more assertive, less conformist, and believers in gender equality.  When they get harassed, they are then more likely than female religious believers to feel,"This isn't right!"   Female religious believers have more conventional attitudes about gender norms, such as "Boys will be boys" and take a purely defensive posture about male's sometimes predatory attitudes.   Hence Bob's observation about higher reporting.
